Elevator Speed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Elevator Problem Discussion : One Thread

I was just wondering if anyone can give me an approximate range of the speeds elevators travel. My physics class has asked and I don't know the answer, but I'd like to be able to give them a range so that we can discuss the implications of this.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

I assume you mean passenger elevators. 100 fpm to 1200 fpm. Usual increments are 100, 150, 200. 350, 500, 700, and 1000 fpm. Fred

Some high-rise buildings also use 1,200, 1,400, and 1,600 feet per minute (fpm) contract speeds for shuttle car express service. A few specialty lifts reportedly reach 2,500 fpm.
