The Sony DVD player only reads CD-RW and won't read the CD-R's. I've read that it may read Sony CD-R's but I haven't tried yet.

Scott's answer is probably correct. If you have a Sony DVD player that doesn't support CD-R, the Prime Peripherals brand of CD-Rs will work. You can buy them in the US at Office Max. Last time I checked, it was not possible to buy them online, only in the stores, so if you don't live near an Office Max, you will have to stick to using CD-RW discs.

My Sony DVP-PQ1 doesn't have any problems reading VCDs on CD-R's, and this includes El-Cheapo 10 pence a disc down the jumble sale CD-R media too!
