HELP!!! Battery/Electrical Problem

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MV Agusta F4 : One Thread

I have a 2000 F4S and ran into some problems today. I was about to leave for and noticed that my battery was dead. Right away I figured I had left the bike in the park position the whole day instead of the lock which explained why my battery was completely dead. I tried to push start it several times and it wouldn't start at all. Finally after numerous tries, I had a friend bring over some jumper cables and we jump started the bike. It started with no problem. After a few mins I figured that it was safe to ride back home since the alternator will charge the battery on the way home. All was fine until about 10 miles later. All of a sudden the battery light went on. I continued riding until all of a sudden the spedo and tacho went blank...then the bike completely stopped working. Since my friend was following me, he saw me stop and we decided to jump it again...this time we left the jumper cables on for a while so the battery could charge for a bit. All this time the battery warning light was on. I rode another few miles or so and the bike died again. SO we did it one last time and i finally made it home, still with the battery light on.

I am wondering what the problem could be. Is it because my battery was completely dead? Or is there something wrong with the alernator or any problems with the electrical?I am wondering what I am going to connect the battery tonight to a charger and hopefully it will replenish it. My main concern is why the battery warning light stayed on and why the bike just died while I was driving. Has anyone had any alternator or electrical problems? What do I do next??? Any help would be great appreciated. Thanks@

The same thing happen to me last year, being under waranty I call to get a new battery, thinking something was wrong with it. But after a good day of gentle charge, everything was fine, I cancel the new battery. That was a year ago, and since I never had any problem.

Sound like this bike need lot of Watts (injection+headlamp+cluster) and if the battery is not fully charge , the alternator cannot keep up and charge a dead battery.

Give a good charge over night and see what happen..

Make sure the battery termimal leads, both power and (2)earths, are secured tight.....had a similar experience and that's all it was. Pete

The best thing you can buy for your battery is a OPTI-MATE. You plug it in and it maintains you battery in tip top conditiond, really worth the money.

WARNING DO NOT USE A RUNNING CAR/TRUCK TO CHARGE YOUR MV . IT PUTS OUT 60 TO 130 AMPS AND THE BATTERY IN THE BIKE CAN'T TAKE 20AMPS FOR MORE THAN 5 MINUTS, IT'LL BOILE AND SUFFER PERMANANT DAMAGE .IF YOU MUST USE A CAR . LET THE CABLES SIT FOR 5 MINUTS , START IT ,AND REMOVE CABLES RIGHT AWAY AS NOW YOUR MV ALTERNATER IS PEEKING OUT TRYING TO CHARGE A BIG OL CAR BATTERY AND THAT WILL FRY IT IN SHORT ORDER . Had the same problem with my bike. Left the parking light on all day and the battery went dead. I jumped it and it ran fine for a few miles till the same thing you described happened. Turns out when it was jumped I blew the charging fuse located on the left side of the bike. MV saw fit to include a spare so go ahead and change it out and you should be fine. And be sure to replace the spare in case it happens again. Ducati superbikes have the same sort of set up. Let us know if it works.

This is a good bit of info. Looks like the best thing to do when charging the battery is to remove the terminals and take it out (probably a good idea anyway because battery explosions during charging are not at all uncommon).
