The Financial District of San Francisco is that area north of Market where most of the High rise office buildings exist. One way to learn its history is to start with the buildings.Chapter 2 of Sally B Woodbbridge's excellent book "San Francisco Architecture" is entitled "The Financial District"
Good luck in your research.

Elza, that's a very good question. Now, being very knowledgable about San Francisco for my age (12 years, 9 months), I should know this (and I do)! The Financial District is located by Market Street, towards the Embarcadero. The famous, or infamous, Transamerica and Bank of America buildings are located here. The south area was once an open harbor; this is now landfilled with sand and ships from the Gold-Rush era. To find more, I suggest Surfwax.com. Good Luck in your research!
