hi, well, my question is, if you are going thru a divorce, being legally separated from your spouse, and you have met someone else and they got romantically involved, as far as having a baby together and they don't want the baby to be born out of wedlock, can they get married by the church and then after the divorce is final get married thru the courts? can you give me some biblical counsel? please answer me asap I need to help my brother & sister in christ and I want to have a biblical answer.

The difference between church marriage vs legal marriage was not so clear cut, as it appears today, with the church/state separation thing. Either you were married or you weren't, without any in-between degrees. The concept of marriage has two essential elements of love and obedience. The Bible teaches obedience to authority, including civil/government authority and therefore you will not find bible- believing churches that will marry a couple when the state wouldn't. In fact many churches wouldn't re-marry a divorced couple in the first place, others are a little more flexible on a case-by-case basis. And without wishing to appear lacking in grace, the question has to be asked if they don't want the baby to be born out of wedlock, why did they enter the sexual relationship in the first place? It seems somewhat contradictory....

Are you sure your dealing with a brother and sister in Christ? Seems like the fruit of their life is contrary to that of Scripture. They have bigger problems than worrying about the technicalities of marriage. If they both know the Lord...they both know that the relationship they entered was wrong. Repentance is the best way to sort out the situation. No adulterer or fornicater will enter the Kingdom of God. They have the mistaken idea that God is going to bless their mess if they manage to make it legal. The best thing that can happen in this situation is that the two parties repent and seek God's forgivenss. Then the future of the child involved is much brighter than if they just try establish some sort of legality.
