i can't play vcds on my windows media player. the file is .dat file. so when i try play, it says cannot play back the file. format is not suported. D:\MPEGAV\Avseq01.dat that is the file i'm trying to play. do i need a decoder or something else. please help.

Try downloading Windows Media Player 9 off of http://www.download.com its the newest version, came out a few days ago, and it can play my VCD's perfect. I was having trouble with older versions, but this one worked just fine on my computer.

The new media player beta version 9 cant play avseq01.dat files from vcd i tried all sorts of ways but no way so dont bother.

try playing it in powerdvd. dvd's and vcd's work very clearly in this, even full screen. if it doesnt work, maybe you need a codec, maybe mpeg-1 codec.

Hmm, could be something new in M$'s digital rights management.

Try copying the file to your hard disk and change the extension to mpg. That should work. If not, the RealOne player should play it.

I have been having the same problem. Have a number of vcds, mostly chinese origin, most of which have been working fine. But lately a few of them dont play at all. Error messages saying no combination of filters could be found to render the stream. Error=80040218. In a two vcd set of one movie, one of them will work / play fine while the other wont play at all. Then one of the nonplaying vcds was tried in a dvd player and it worked. But still I dont have a dvd player of my own and it still wont play in my computer using wmp, realone or even winamp. Any ideas please email me. Thanks.

a little util 2 determine if u have right codecs installed etc. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html just load in the mpeg, avi, lets ya know if u gat all appropriate codecs installed

I got my WMP9 previously working fine playing .dat files but now i got it screwed up 'coz I've been installing and uninstalling software and somehow the codec to play .dat file are deleted or something 'coz the player now is saying the file is not supported even w/ the WMP6 w/c is the mplayer2.exe on the WMP program files dir..

How do i fix this? plaese help.

No, u cannot need a decorder, simply u can install Windows Media Player 9 Series or XingMPEG Player 3.30. Coz, Xing is the only one software play Avseq01.dat file.

I have a simillar problem. I have Win Xp and Combo drive. I am not able to play .DAT files using WMP 9 or Xing Media player Interesting thing is i am not able to copy the .DAT file to my harddrive. Please suggest.... Thanks in advance..
