Question for Patty

greenspun.com : LUSENET : CountrySide Family : One Thread

Hi Patty, did you send me a message titled 'A very new game'?? The address came up as: SycamoreHollow1 I opened it but it's blank. I just wondered if it was you or if someone is trying to send a virus or something. I also got two others: one with an attachment regarding the Klez Virus which I didn't open & one from someone called moopups from the homesteadingtoday.com forum( I don't know who that person is though)which was also blank entitled 'client interface available'. My virus scan software is 32 mos old so it won't pick up any of the newer viruses. Time to update the software!! I guess I ticked someone off with my opinions.

Answers

No!!! I didn't!!! Yikes. But you aren't in my address book, sooooo I guess it's not a virus on my end.....? I don't know?

-- Patty (SycamoreHollow@aol.com), August 14, 2002.

Hi Kathy, I was getting those same types of e-mails. The addresses were familar ones from these forums, but no messages in the body of them. I got one of those from supposedly Cheryl that even had a topic we were discussing on their forum in the header. Not thinking, I responded back. Hope I didn't send her a virus. :( My e-mail has been messed up since then, don't know if these weird e-mails were the culprit or not, but I still am not able to use my e-mail.

-- Annie (mistletoe6@earthlink.net), August 14, 2002.

I usually don't open any e-mails from unknown sources but I didn't pay enough attention since I knew Patty's addy-didn't notice that extra 1 behind her address.:( I will Never reply through my yahoo account if I think there's a problem so if anyone gets anything from me with my yahoo addy-I didn't send it!! If I have a question I'll post it here to be sure before opening the message or I'll post here to the person that I'm sending an e-mail directly to them. Gee don't folks have anything better to do than mess with our mail.

-- Kathy Aldridge (beckoningwinds@yahoo.com), August 14, 2002.

One reason I use a fake addy is because the first virus I had gotten was from someone on the old Countryside forum. It should be a custom to ask someone first on the forum if you want to send them a personal e-mail . If everyone uses this standard , than you'll know if you get a private e-mail from someone and they didn't ask or tell you on the forum that they were going to send you one , you can just delete it. I e-mailed someone a few weeks ago on another forum and I asked first if it was OK . I see it as entering someones house . Moopups is a guy named Mitch Hearn he's in central Florida and use to post on the old countryside.

To add, because I mentioned Mitch's name , I should have added ,I wouldn't think he would spam anyone , he used to do a regular posting called Stumpers , it would have Trivial type questains, and people would have to figure the answer.

I get these all the time; I figure its a virus of some kind, even though my Norton scans every day. They're easy to spot cuz they take up a whole bunch of space, like over 100k, so I just delete them. I also know that the person who looks like they "sent" it to me, really didnt.

Yes, it is discouraging sometimes to realize how many disturbed, unhappy, bored and downright mean folks there are out there! But they are still a minority, most folks are good people.

Hey guys! I get all kinds of virus's almost everyday. I NEVER open any attatchments from anybody for any reason. The viruses I've contracted in the past were all from somebody I knew--with an attatchment. Those folks didn't send'm to me intentially. My name just happened to be in their address book when they received a virus themselves.

A good way to check if you have a virus is to click on the little monitors on the bottom right hand part of your screen. Bring it up to the screen and look at the "bytes sent, bytes received" part. The numbers on the "sent" should be much more than those received. When I've had virus's before the "bytes received" were as much or more than those sent. That tells you that your puter is sendin out way more than receivin and is actually sendin the virus at that moment.

Back up all your good stuff on floppys BEFORE a virus comes visitin. When you get one --crash your puter and reload it with the restore discs that came with it. Hope this has helped a mite. I'm puter dumb but am learnin.

Oh BTW--moopups is Mitch Hearn. He would never send a virus--- somebody else is doin it and usin his name. old hoot. Matt.24:44

Does anyone know a free virus scanning site they'd reccomend. Hoot I want to look at the bytes sent , bytes recieved , I don't know what you mean by little monitors at the bottom right of the screen , can you explain it in more detail .................Speaking of virus does anyone know the symthoms of the West Nile virus on people. I woke up with a back ache and while in town earlier today , the pain seems to have spread to my neck up to the back of my head and ears . I also have that weak muscle shakey feeling. I get bit by mosquitos alot cause I won't use bug spray. Now I'm thinking , the toxic feeling I get from the bug spray isn't as bad as how I'm feeling now .I'll start a new thread on West Nile latter unless someone else does it first . Lattest I've heard a women caught it in Missouri while on vacation over there , she's from Massachusetts. Between the biting bugs and the extreme heat this summer , I know it's not the season for it but I swear I,m getting cabin fever .

After I read Kathy's post, I updated my virus stuff and ran a complete scan. I think I'm ok.

One of the ones I have that I got free is AVG, Steve. I'm not sure if it is free any longer. Hold on,....yup, it appears to be.

Hope this helps, I've heard it's pretty good, it seems to be.

Kathy, I actually _was_ going to email you, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. I hope you don't have a virus. :-( Ummm, I wanted to add some info, but really don't want to post it...pondering if it's even important enough to worry about...?

-- Patty (SycamoreHollow@aol.com), August 14, 2002.

I got the same message and it said it was from Patty, apparently there is either a virus or someone using the forum email addys.

-- BC (desertdweller44@yahoo.com), August 14, 2002.

there are programs "out there",, that scam for email address,, and use them to send out things,, porn, virues and such. One reason a fake email is nice,, or at least a web based one. Im so glad I bought Norton,,though my server went to a webbased email also,, so they catch ALOT fo virues. If your server has a webbased email,, might be prudant to check your eamil thru that first.

-- Stan (sopal@net-pert.com), August 14, 2002.

Really?! Oh no. :-(

Now, if I did have a virus, I could understand it rampantly sending emails to folks in my address book, but I don't have a single person _IN_ my address book because of that possibility. And I've never e- mailed Kathy, nor she I, thus her email addy is nowhere on my computer.

So, that's weird...

-- Patty (SycamoreHollow@aol.com), August 14, 2002.

I do get the strong feeling that someone who doesn't post here ,but comes buy to read here , is being entertained by us trying to figure out what these e-mails are about. And they know .

-- SM Steve (Unreal@home.com), August 14, 2002.

Patty, If you want to e-mail me use this address: sacred_cedar@yahoo.com. I have never used it for anything but business stuff so if I get something from you just put on the subject line a meesage that includes the name of this lists owner. That's what Tom & I do(put a code word in the subject line) so we know it's really from each other. Steve I think you are probably right, someone's sitting back having a laugh at our expense. I hope it makes their lives a little happier. Just so everyone knows I don't have anyone from this board in my address books. As odd as it sounds I still keep any addresses rather postal or web based in an old time leather bound address book. Have a great night!! Kathy who's still waiting for rain in KY. :(

Steve! The little monitors I'm talkin about comes on the screen when I go online. Located down right beside the time. If you locate your curser on it and double click it--it will come up on the screen as a rectangle box. Within that box is the connect speed, duration, bytes received and bytes sent. Anyhow this is the way it is on my puter. Three buttons on the right hand side of the little box. Top one is "ok", "disconnect" and "details". This is also the way I disconnect from the net---click on the "disconnect". Hope this helps. old hoot.

For free virus scan software go to www.infostar.com Theres a whole list of stuff you can get. We have AVG and it seems to be good, also on infostar. Even free updates. Also PCcillin. It'll give your puter an online virus scan free.
