Building A Go Kart

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

Hey I'm 12 and my friend and I are building a go-cart. We have a Honda 8 hp motor that fits a go-kart. It is a horizontal-shaft engine. We are looking for info and maybe plans, so we know what we need to get, and how to put it together. Thanx!!! :)

Im planning to make a go kart aswell..i was wondering where u can get an engine likes yours for a cheap price.

-- Bob burlock (k_uch@Hotmail.com), September 09, 2002.

Me and my friend are to but where do you get the go kart structure from?

-- Tyrone (www.Tbs588@aol.com), September 10, 2002.

You can do the frame from sractch with plain tubular steel. My young brothers did it some years ago with a snowmobile engine and a belt / pulley system. They show it on their website in the go-kart section. It's in french, but images are talking a lot!

I just completed my go kart frame and i started from scratch, all i had was the measurements and my own sketch of what i was going to weld,i completed my frame not to long ago and i have all the parts to build, they are all brand new, ex, hubs, axel, bearings, torque-a- verter, disc brakes, pedals....the WORKS!, i ran into a problem tho, i purchased a brand new 6.5 hp briggs and stratton, engine, and i have now clue how to hook that throttle cable from the engine to the cable, i have been reading rebuild books and such forth and i still have no clue, if there is anyone reading this, please get back to me on it asap Thanx

Hi, I also want to build a go kart. Would it work if I had a vertical motor with a horizontal output shaft? Please email, thanks

-- k (kdog@softhome.net), May 03, 2003.

well im building a Go-Kart, and i got a 2hp 109cc 3000rmp~ briggs and straton engine on it, and its not done, its a 3 wheeler, im 14. its made of wood (i got a low budget, and i cant weld)and i got a bike's steering on it. its got a strong sturdy frame to it, a box >.> . it rolls, my brakes suck, i need a chain, and im going to see if my dad can weld the rims to the axle in the back, i got no hubs. ive been looking for a junkyard, but cant find one near me. anyway, i just need a few things, but i could help with plans, if you still need them, e-mail me if you want to, i am a good technical worker (A+ in industrial tech at school, 11th grade level too)

-- steve (penguinboy62@hotmail.com), May 16, 2003.

A few questions:

1 - Why are you all bothering with torque convertors? It's not like you're using automatic transmissions, so what's the point I'm missing?

2 - How do you disengage the engine from the wheels; what kind of clutch do you use? My first impulse is to find an old manual clutch somewhere, but I keep hearing centrifical clutches mentioned. With a centrifical clutch, do you just reduce throttle to idle when braking to make the clutch disengage? What kind of delay is there between reducing throttle and the clutch disengaging (because I wouldn't want to try to apply the brakes before the clutch disengages; that could ruin the engine)?

3 - I know most of you use wood (for ease of construction) or tube steel (for durability) when building your karts. Since my motor only puts out 3.5 hp, I wanted to build a lightweight kart, so I had an alternative thought: What about PVC pipe? I've seen dogsleds made from PVC; why not a go-kart? It should be lightweight, and would probably be strong enough. With a decent truss design, I think flexing could be reduced to reasonable levels too. It would also be incredibly easy to work with. What do you think about using a PVC frame?

-- TerranFury (sorry_i_have@no_email.com), May 18, 2003.

dear user,

please do not use p.v.c.pipe.it maybe safe for a couple of year's,but, once the sun hit's plastic,it goes britle.and if you have a prang,it will split, and there is nothing more danerous than broken plastic. hope this help's steve.

you are so dum. all of you. you all want to make a gokart. ok then do it. but wht happens when your engine needs work on it? you ppl need to go to a small engine class. thats what i did. now i no lots of $hit. i can make any thing out of any thing. and if you ppl dont have the tools to build dont try $hit cuz you will go no where. any way save up for a gokart. cuz if something breaks in hafe you can call the com to return it. you no you can get a gokart for lil $$$$. if you dont have a welder, hand tools,or any thing like that dont start.

People.. One website. Printed off the plans a few years back.. Should work great. But it think it's important not to follow the plans too closely.. You'll get frustrated trying to get it persice. Instead, go to the plans for ideas and make your own personal go- kart. The thing about building a go-kart is to have fun building it and to say it's YOURS and not from a plan. But nontheless, here's a good plan. http://www.mxk.com/1ykplans/

-- Warren Parsons (thewp@hotmail.com), June 19, 2003.

theres a lot of dumb ppl out there. to use a verticle shafted engine you have to get the gear box out of an old ride on lawn mower. its pretty simple from there. with a horizontal shaft engine its best to use a centrifigal clutch. you can use the back chasis of a ride on lawn mower. i have heard of that. i am currently building a go kart. my grandpa is heping me he really knows what hes doing. if you need help just email me. to find an engine you can buy one or go door 2 door asking if ppl have old real lwnamowers or other horizontal shafted engines. the best way to get real speed is to put a large crank on your engine and a small one on your axle. your better off using a live axle. make sure your mounts and welds are strong or else it wont last worth shit. me and my friend are doing this together and after we learn we plan on building them and selling the frames so if you want or need one email me. they will probably run around 150- 250 $USD. surf around a bit and you can get some good ideas and just do some looking around your neighborhood. you would be surprised at what you find and its normallly cheap. if you need any other help or want to know our progress we will post it in the next 3 months or less. contact me in 2 weeks and ill give u the site name.

-- josh mcghee (meboy312@hotmail.com), June 23, 2003.

Yea I think that Schawn needs to shut his mouth and stop trying to tell everyone how smart he is and everything. Seriously I have never seen anyone with that big of a head. As you can tell I don't like people who think they are better than everybody else.

-- 666 (burninhell5810@aol.com), July 01, 2003.

I don't know how I won't up here... Anyway... Nothing beats a 5hp like a mo. 130202 (older) briggs for easy of use and parts are EVERYWHERE!!. Cheap clutches ($25) and easy to mount. As far as the guy who didn't know what a torque converter is YOUR AN IDIOT. Torque convertors give you a constantly variable "transmition" (CVT) that allows a ratio from about 3:1 to .80:1 yes. thats overdrive. So if you had a kart that goes say 40mph with a standard clucth and chain, adding a torque convertor will give you 3x the acceleration and a few mph on the top end as well. Now change the gearing for more top end and you won't loose any low end in compairson to a clucth. You'll still have more power. Here's a good example. El-Chepo Carter funkart did 20mph@3600rpm 5hp briggs. Just by adding the torque convertor it changed it from a slow turtle crawl breese maker into a neck jerking 30mph beast. Now I changed the sprocket on the axle to a smaller and I get 45mph and still spins the tires off the line unlike it ever did when it was stock with a clucth only. So to the idiot who doesn't see the benifits to a torque convertor system. Cost? Oh about $100-$150 for a bolt-on Comet system. Best $100 you'll ever spend. TRUST ME.

Just go to www.sadik.net/go/kart or try goin to google and type in free plans for a go/kart. If ya wanna build a good go/kart u-ll need a welder. wood may do but only for 2 months or so. after that- it/ll break and yar screwed. so just get a welder and start building. u don/t need plans. if yar not imaginative u can't build a go/kart anyways. This post is in general response to jackass973@aol.com, funkymonkey42@aol.com, chevymahem454@aol.com, poo_poo_number2@hotmail.com, tazer_soft@umpire.com, adamcairns@hotmail.com and mofo106@hotmail.com (amongst others).

You guys have in no way contributed any constructive information to this message board whatsoever. Based upon the responses posted by the "legitimate" users, it appears that most of them are young kids 10 to 15 years of age. These guys simply don't possess the needed experience, money, tools, etc. to build a go-kart and are asking for a little guidance; they are not asking for your pointless comments and child-like behavior. Of course, any 12 year old kid with the desire, drive and idea to build something fun and memorable out of a pile of old parts is likely bright enough to figure out that responding to immature remarks from the jerks of the world is not worth their time. They have better things to do (like building go- karts). So, why am I responding, you ask???? To add constructively to this message board, of course. To the jerks: Instead of putting down others, try to find something worthwhile to do with your time (like building a go kart).

To the rest:

1) Figure out what you want to build and what your budget will allow. For most of you, I assume that a lack of money will determine what you are able to get hold of; so you'll have to be innovative. You might consider doing odd jobs for people in your neighborhood to earn a little cash (nothing in this world comes free, you have to give up something that you have in order to get something that you want)

2) Draw plans (this will help you to visualize your project and avoid unforseen difficulties). Think through each basic part of the go-kart. You'll need a frame, wheels and tires, a steering mechanism, an engine and drive train (consisting of chain and sprockets or belt and pulleys driven by an engine-mounted clutch or torque convertor), and throttle and brake controls. That might sound like a lot, but all of these bits can be made from simple designs. Go to a local store that sells go-karts (like Tractor Supply Company) and try to get ideas from the go-karts they sell there.

3) Remember K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid) No, I'm not being mean. Just try to keep the design simple, at first. This will result in a cheaper and more reliable go-kart that will be easier for you to build. Remember to take your time and that you can always upgrade the go-kart later.

4) A welded steel tube frame would be, by far, the best choice. I would stay away from PVC due to its eventual brittleness, flexing and lousy heat resistance. A wood frame may work for a small (and I do mean SMALL) go kart. If you don't have a welder, look for old frames in yard sales, junkyards, etc. You might even find an old welder at a yard sale, and that would be a great investment. Make sure you get an adult to help with any welding; you're dealing with molten steel here!!

5) Don't worry about going any larger than a 5HP engine, you'll be pleased with the power it can provide.

6) Go to http://www.northerntool.com/ These guys have a lot of go- kart parts to help you finish your project (clutches, wheels, tires, chains, etc.)

7) Have fun and don't ever let anyone lead you to believe that you can't, or shouldn't, accomplish your goals. Take it from me: Anything is possible through hard work and determination.

I hope this info. helps.

-- Frank Schuler (edgarallandoe@yahoo.com), July 20, 2003.

hey people....... dont try to use a push mower engine, its not worth the trouble. you have to get 90 degree angle converter, or use pulleys that are twisted at the same angle. the pulleys tend to slip, and the converter is like 250 $. just get a horizontal shaft engine off of some peice of equipment like a snowblower. look in the traders guides that you will find at any local newspaper selling place.

good luck............matt

-- matt (dsakjfgnduifng@xjhfg.com), July 20, 2003.

Building a go cart is not as difficult as you are thinking. Keep it simple is the best advice you can get. a steel frame is really the only way to go. if you are having a hard time getting started, you might find an old riding lawnmower and strip it to the bone. From there, you will have a great starting place. You don't need anything fancy to have alot of fun. Remember. keep it simple. If you need any idaes email me and I will try to help.

have fun.

Im pretty sure your all idiots. now that weve got that down, gokarts are east to build. or you can even buy a frame for about 175$$ trust me, if u cant weld, its worth the money.a thrtlecable is easy, mostly use pull springs, adjusters from bicicle brakes and a cabel, wow that was hard.NEVER EVER BUILD ANYTHING OUT OF WOOD!!!, bad idea,it breaks and cracks and looks dumb... YOur even dumber if you have a tecumsche engine. honda is cool though, to find a frame visit google.com and type "go kart frame" wow that was even harder... does anyone agree with me?

-- Randy leary (Randoo29@aol.com), July 28, 2003.

i retract my previous statement, i feel bad about putting people down, but seriously building a go kart isnt very hard listen: 1.get an engine, make sure it is horizontal shaft(shaft coming out the side) once you have this, youre on your way 2.look for a frame, obviously there are alot of people wiht go karts, and alot who dont want them anymore, ebay has alot of frames... 3.if you were lucky enought to find a complete frame, without the engine all you may need is a clutch, if not keep reading. 4.if you cant find one, build one. alot of people cant weld, but if you visit your local hardware store, you could actually buy cast iron pipes and fittings and make a frame(there might be alot of bolting resulting in a weaker frame) 5.assemble.. 6.parts .... an axle, spindles, tires, rims, steering mechanisms, seat, throttle cable, pedals, bbrake cable, most of all frame

sorry about all the shit i said

Im 16 im welding a mini-bike frame together using aluminum tubes. I,ve got a 109cc edger engine which should make it really go. If anyone needs an engine just go to the nearest scap metal dump. people always bring their engines there and you could realy find a good running one, you just might have to change the spark plug or clean the filter or whatever that went wrong with it, its the reason it was thrown out usualy. You might have to pay so dont forget your walet, but it shouldn't be much, maybe like 2 dollars or so. and check out this site if you dont know what your doing or need ideas http://www.aaroncake.net/projects

hey, ive been planning a go kart forever, and now im finally old enough to actually follow through, i have a frame in designing phase, all set there, but i have a bunch of questions about preformance......the kart will weigh around 300-400 with all componants, but about the componants, i want this kart to go about 30-35mph top speed, what parts would i need besides the engine, torque converter, steering componants, braking componants, wheels/tires, and frame? will an 8hp briggs and straton do the trick for the motor? and what type of breaks should i use? please respond and help me out.

-- Dan Doe (mantleford@aol.com), August 06, 2003.

YOU CANNOT USE A PUSHMOWER FOR A GO CART!!!! YOU NEED A HORIZONTAL SHAFT ENGINE> (shaft that comes out the side) A PUSH MOWER HAS A VERTICLE SHAFT ENGINE> (shaft that comes out the bottom)...

Hello,I have a frame in great shape. It is set up for two engines. It has the tires, and wheel, brakes, and cable. All it needs is a engine. If interested let me know. THANKS

-- Tom (tgreen@chartertn.net), September 23, 2003.

I picked up an '82 honda with a 750 4 in it, mounted it, built a frame around it, made a bunch of connections - throttle, brake, clutch, shift linkage, electricals - tach and speedo .. mounted a seat, built a gas tank up front .. after the build, I start it up get rolling, it's damn fast, but I don't punch it for fear if something goes wrong, bring it through all the gears .. runs and drives well. I stop and dump the clutch and my frame bent right where I was sitting, tires spun and front end went up in the air. Needless to say too much power is awesome. Anyway, since then I've beefed the frame up and the thing RIPS, gets to 60mph in a traction limited 3.5 seconds. I've got 16x9 inch wheels in the back with some nice rubber on them, and the front I found some atv wheels and tires. All total, only money I spent was the $200 on the bike, which I then sold the gas tank, suspension and a few other things .. and ended up making about $20. Next project - suspension.

ok it looks to me like you guys are mostly going about building your go-karts the wrong way. the most crucial peice for a go-kart is by far not the engine. it would be better to start on your chassis first. they need not be complicated, but they need to be safe, thats why you stay away from wooden frames unless you want to end up in hospital because your frame fell apart at 30mph....its not a pretty thought. my first go kart was built by my uncle and myself when i was probably about 12, it used 1 1/2 inch steel galvanised tubing, and had no roll cage. if anyone wants the basic idea, i'll draw up some general plans so you can get the idea. but we built everything else before we found a suitable engine. which was a horizontal shaft honda engine, and had a centrifugal clutch assembly which i would recomend to you for a first kart, its alot easier to drive and you need not worry about extra pedals, and limits the top speed lower than if you had a gearbox, but my kart still did 35mph and that feels alot faster than in a car...trust me

well, i just thought id put my little bit in

-- justin (dj_thomas_street@hotmail.com), December 30, 2003.

Hi all. I was looking over the number of posts here refering to using a lawn mower engine for a go kart engine. This is a bad idea as most of them are vertical shaft, and you really should have a horizontal shaft. There is another good reason, too. Push mower engines have a light weight flywheel on them, and are very difficult to start without the added weight of a blade. If you were to get it to start, they flywheel key would shear, and cause a "kickback". If you tried to re-start it, you would most likely get injured because the recoil rope would attempt to pull out of your hands. I don't really expect you to understand any of this, but just heed my warning, you can injure your hands quite badly from trying to start a lawn mower engine without the blade. Take it from someone with over 10 years repairing lawnmowers.

-- Joey (poop@poop.com), April 24, 2004.

listen up yank, this is how to build a go kart.First you need plenty of metalworking experience a good surewld(tm) arc welder.plenty of square or round section 15mm steel is sufficient for frame.good set of wheels (these are nearly the hardest thing yo obtain in ireland).back axle with drive sprocket.Air cooled motobike engine dont mount engine behind seat it will overheat.beside the seat is better.set of bearings for back axle.steering column and mechanism from small car(something ye dont have in the states).good bucket seat.in ireland there are plenty of good go karts and crap ones aswell

-- paddy from ireland. (avi13020@itcarlow.ie), April 27, 2004.

First of all you can't make a go kart out of fucking pvc pipe. I mean are you guys fucking retards. How the fuck would you mount a motor to that. Just use a motorcycle engine WITH and fucking clutch. problem solved. Next you need to know how to weld with a MIG welder not a fucking ARC welder. A arc welder is for thick metal not thin tubing. The steel you need is either 1" with a wall thickness of at LEAST .095 not fucking PVC.

You guys are fucking idiots, Hope you all go to hell.

-- you guys a fucking idiots (you_are_morons_@fuck_you.com), April 27, 2004.

That is the absolute CHEAPEST way to go. I will mail you plans for either. All plans come on a CD rom easily useable for any PC. Or I can mail you them and you can have them in paper. Your choice. all you dumb little kids are gay. vstop wasting your time trying to build a go-kart. if you want one, save up and buy one. and not only that, but in a few years your gonna want to get a car, so a go- kart would be useless. if you don't even have hand tools, or a welder, dont even try. if you dont have any mechanical skills, dont try. im so sick of seeing little kids come on here with the same questions..... where can i get a frame for cheap? how do i build a go-kart? how do i mount an engine? you little kids suck balls, go kill yourselves. i hope your little go-karts blow up while your driving them, because your so dumb that you dont change the oil

What u all poeple have ? The guy comes here with a question about how to do this or how to do that and he receives 30 reply telling him he won't be able, he should buy a new one, or asking why he wants to do that or telling him he's an idiot (?) So much wasted energy.... ARGGGh. it make me sick!.

Now for the constructive part of this post, i would say that ideas will come on their own, just start somewhere. Build a square with steel tubing, 30 inches by 65. Then, fit 4 wheels with bearings and make it roll (don't think about the motor yet). Then, fit a steering and a "thing" to have it moves the front wheels from left to right. Give it a try.... Then, fit something to sit on it and see how it goes.... Then, fit a motor etc.... The whole idea behind this is take it one step at a time, don't "try to build a go-kart", just build the frame as i said and then "build a wheeled frame" ...... at the end you'll endup with a kart.

-- good girls (Imspecial@bellsouth.net), October 15, 2004.

All you folks wanting to use a 4 stroke motor with a vertical shaft motor should not turn the engine on its side. Instead use pulleys on the engine and the drive axle. Connect the v-belt onto both pulleys and go ahead and ride. The v-belt will have to be twisted from horizontal on the bottom of the vertical shaft motor to vertical on the horizontal driveshaft. The biggest error you can make is if the kart wants to go backwards. If that happens, just take the belt off and twist the belt in the opposite direction. Remember, keep vertical shaft engines mounted just as they were on the device it came from. Sure, the belt won't last as long as if both pulleys were perfectly alighed, but you'll be riding. Happy karting! Dale

K sum of u guys dont get it, a few of u r 12 year old idiots who think a chainsaw engine will power a go kart...WRONG if you are serios about getting a nice cart and dont wanna drop 8000$, then go to youe local junkyard and pick up a frame. i recommend a honda pilot or honda oddessey from mid 80's, these frames are the perfect size for one rider, and since most of them have parted out, u can get the frame for 200$, for the engine, i recommend a four stroke, because people in congress are outlawing 2 strokes. for an odessey, id say any engine over 300cc will work. get all the extra parts like sprockets, chains, tires, lights etc from the junkyard. so, if you want a real machine and not a pos with a weedwhacker engine, find sumone who knows how to weld. im fourteen, and have been welding for two years, its not to dificult with a feed welder. after spending about 1800$, u have a racer that will make any 5 year old in a manco go kart pee his pants... also, make it big and powerful, when u get older u wont showoff with a 4 horse briggs and stratton.

-- JON (ef@aOL.COM), October 20, 2004.

i forgot to say, ive been to tons of scrapyards, and they are littered with 200x, 250x, and 350x engines, no im not talking about the new atv's, im talking about the old skewl three wheelers manufactured by honda from early 80's till 1985. these engines are powerful, fast and will run forever. a 200x generates about 38 horsepower, and would hit 52 with a 150 pound rider. of course, ull have to gear it down. i would recomend a centrifigural clutch or also a "automatic" these are just a flywheel that catches on the outer casing when the throdle is pushed. this way, you get a simple machiene that comes out of gear when u push the throddle, no shifting. if u cant weld go to the nearest machiening shop to mount the motor. after tht have sum fun. bore out for more power, put in a new carb, trick it out. it might seem really costly, but the cost of a homemade cart is thousands less than a factory one. like i sed im 14, but i have a job that would cover this whole project with a few paychecks. any questions post them here.-jon

-- JON (eeesay@aol.com), October 20, 2004.

look guys, you dont use clutches. Use make a bult system with a tensioner. you have it hooked up so when you brake, it disengages the tensioner. simple as that. it worked for me

-- Adam (eyegood38@aol.com), October 23, 2004.

Try for the bigger go-karts.....thats right, DUNE BUGGIES! i have one that is a 45HP and this things is sweet and cheap too. for the cost of a brand new 10HP Go-kart, you can make a custom one if ya got a welder. im 15 and i have been welding for 2 months.....it is not hard at all. I have a stick welder. and if ya need extra cash, start aking things with the welder to sell. that what im doing. and put those lawn mowers to better use. get a 63amp GMC alternator, and hok that sucker up to it. bam genorator. i have plans though for this vertical shaft go-kart eveyone is looking for, so e-mail me if ya want em. anything else you need plans for, lemme know, i will make em for ya.

Hey chaps prob a bit late but here goes. I recently got two 250cc 4 stroke motors off the net. The make 45 hp at 14500rpm and pull 18000 till red line so there a serious peice of gear. I went to a local indoor go kart operator and got some ideas and went from there. It has hydro brakes and a 6spd paddle shift gear box made from starter motor solinieds (cant spell for crap) to drive the shift leaver. If you think about things and plan it right you could make a wicked kart many cars will struggle to keep up with. All up i guess i spent a grand in New Zealand dollars. Im scared to try the top speed out and have only made it to 4th gear which is about 160kph (100mph). 0 to 100kph (60mph) in 3.2 sec. The frame is chromolly tube which is light but not cheap. A little advise find someone who can TIG weld and become there best mate TIG is far better and a neater finish too. If your gunna do it do it right the first time and get good parts. there faster and safer. Ill send a link with some fotos some time when i can be bothered. Have fun guys.

-- Haha right (bob@hotmail.com), November 15, 2004.

ok guys, i no this forum thing is for karts, but i gotta contribute anyways....first off, most of u kids wanting carts are like 12 rite? well in a year or two ull wanna have a machiene that is a beast a 5horse and a go cart wont be to kewl for a guy. so, instead save your money and buy a honda 250r atc. these things are fucking wicked! i have a 1985 250r atc, stock it hit about 75 miles per hour with enough torque to make ur head spin. I got mine when i was 12, and ive had it for 2 years. since then iver cleaned out the motor (myself, instead of paying sum ass to do it for 50$ at a shop), added a fmf pipe (myself), and had the cylender bored out to a 302cc, now this thing pop's wheelies in 5th gear, hits 93mph (clocked by radar at the dunes) and will peel the pavement off the road. it is a BEAST this isnt a toy, which a go kart is a little safe wagon for kids to cruise around in untill they want more. I got a HELL of alot more, and for about 750$ i had this three wheeled monster in my garage. SO, get a job, save about 600$ and start looking in the paper word of advice though :HONDA 250R'S are serios machienes, not a toy for 11 year old kids to try to handle. i havent wrecked hard yet, but a friend of mine broke his leg in three places on a stock 250r. they run descent (for a two stroke:\) and have more power than you could ever handle. my advice : stop messing with kid toys and pick up a 250r race atc, if 0-60 in 4 seconds and 93mph and enough torque to tear your head off interests you, GET ONE lots of pix on ebay, im really good with these machienes ((honda's are awesome machienes (no offnese yamaha guys ) especialy the 84-87 250r's)) so leave ur aim sn if u need sum help tricking yours out

I've read alot of what you guys have to say over the recent year, and I wanted to know... Is the integration electromagnitism in a new generation go-kart a posibility, because I want to build a fuel effecient gokart and it seems to be a wize way to go! Yes, it would be a hell of a project, but I guess if we can work together we can collectively build this thing and call it our own!

right for all of you wanting a quick simple go kart, get a wooden or metal push kart, find a motor, could either be small or big, next get abike peg, attatch it to the crank of ur engine,(i advice u not to weld it as u can fuck it up)next put the bike peg on the wheel, then ull have a finished spindle drive go kart, now if this sounds all fucked up go to this site and go to the home built scooters and look around, also sign up to the forum,im a member and its awesome scooters.tziworld.com or to go directly to the motorized page http://scooters.tziworld.com/motorized/index.html

Interesting forum guys. For who ever asked about welding the frame, you can but it is much, MUCH easier to bend. Also for anyone using a lawnmower engine dont bother, you need a horizontal shaft motor not a vertical shaft (unless you want to build a transfer case). I am also wondering if this is strictly a go-cart forum or if anyone has actualy worked on buggys? I am currently working on a 4-wheel drive buggy with a 600cc honda CBR motor as a power source and was wondering if anyone knows what a good drive shaft material would be, and if anyone has any good ideas for wheel bearing/hub assembalies. if there are any ideas please respond on back on the forum, thanks.

Anyone wanting free plans and a lot of other helpful information for a off road go kart, try www.jmhkarts.com Anyone wanting to buy go kart parts, try www.kartworld.com Standard car trailer/dolly parts available from any autostore can be used for go karts. Standard hubs with 4" stud pattern will accept ATV wheels. Another easy way for a powered go kart is to fit a car electrical starter motor and battery to a ready built kart by mounting starter so that it is in direct contact with the rear tire. Figure out where to mount the starter and weld brackets to hold it in place, if you let the air out of the tire first, you will get a tighter fit on the tire when you reinflate it. Connect the starter to the battery then run a wire to a switch on the steering wheel then back to the starter motor solenoid which will turn the motor over when you push the switch. Make sure which way the starter turns before you fit it or you will go backwards. You can only engage the starter for a maximum of about 30 seconds then you have to wait for the starter motor to cool down before giving it another blast. Not really what you guys are looking for but i did this in about 1 hour for my 7 year old nephew and he thought it was great.

-- c.r. (burra7@eircom.net), December 09, 2004.

I just finished a go-cart. Couldn't find a chasis so I went down yonder to the wal-mart and stole me a buggy. Gone out my lock cutters and cut it down like wanted then I used jb weld to put on the steering wheel and get up that I made out of small bike wheel off my daugheter linda-sue's old tricikle. I had a broom stick that my wife left when she haulsed arse with that black feller, and that is what i used for the rod that connects my clothes hanger on the buggy tires to the steering wheels. For the seat i gots a old ford seat that was in my living room and mounted it to the buggy. Then for the engine I had some indian head motor off my lawn mower that rent to own store wanted to repossess, well they came and got it guess the joke is on them. Well some more JB weld duct tape to hold on the gas tank and the engine was in. I had a rear end to an old john deer lawn mower and i used some u bolts to mount that down and just used the pully system. Can't find a belt so jim -bob thats my cousin and my new wife's brother gave me his rodeo belt and we so'd it togeter with fishin string and then we started it right up steering is a little loose and the gas is runed off a cable that is run along the buggy with zip em ties. She aint pretty and she gots no breaks but she sure skoots.

Hey all, My name is Danny, and i am in the business of building custom go karts. If anyone wants to order one, e-mail me with your name and phone number, and i will respond. For anyone that is not familiar with "the Duece", it is an offroad go kart designed for extremely rough terrain. From Manco, it costs about $6000. From Kartworld, it costs about $5000. I can custom build it for you for $3500 or cheaper. If you do not need all that power, or you have a younger child, I can also build a smaller, lighter version for much cheaper. hey you guys, im 16 years old and well it seems like on this site there are many people that want to build a go kart. wel i was in the same position just a year ago. eversince i was knee high i wanted a go kart but was never able to get one. so now that im a little older, and was fortunate to have a metal shop at home and at school i learned how to weld, and do the whole fabricating thing. well enough of that, just recently i finshed building a mini sandrail, wich is a little bit bigger than a go kart, its a two seater, with a 400cc twin cylinder kawasaki engine and it has fully independent suspension all the way around. i built this thing from the ground up, and well since it seems that lot of you would like help i decided that you can email me with any qustions and i will be happy to help you/give you ideas on your go kart projects or anything to do with metal work also i have msn messenger and aol messenger so if you ask ill give you my addresses. well hope for somone to email me soon, i sure wished i had somone to help me build my sand rail o and also i would be glad to send you pictures of it.

Hey guys, I'm 15, most of the guys here "trying" to build go karts are less than 15, but who cares. Ok, so you want a go-kart? First off, after you build them, what are you going to do with them? yeah, I know, just drive them in the streets of your neighborhood. Why are you doing this, most of you don't have a clue of anything, most of you don't even know how an engine works! I even heard about some of you trying to make them out of wood! are you nuts? If you don't have money, which is understandable, just go to ebay and look for a very worn out but working old briggs kart, you should get them for less than $400, but please, don't make your own, there is a lot of things that can go wrong! I admire you for wanting to make a kart instead of watching tv the whole day, but you have to use your head. Also, instead of asking so much, go to google and type down gokart, you will get so many pictures that you will be left with no questions, there you can see how they're made. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE MATERIALS, MONEY, OR BRAIN TO HAVE A GO-KART, THEN YOU ARE BETTER OFF WITHOUT ONE, you will find yourselves going slower than a bicycle. I race go karts, never liked briggs but they're pretty cheap. I race now moto shifter kart classes, and don't have that much moeny either, but I'm mostly in front of the pack and only spend $1300 including everything for a kart that goes 110mph in the kart track and could go more. The engine is a Yamaha yz125 that makes about 35hp (ported and polished it myself), that's a bit more than your 5hp briggs don't you think? Guys, I understand you are bored, but don't be stupid, or it will be worst than not having nothing.

Hey cool it!!! Come on. The guys just want to build a gokart. Even if it dosn't work it's still educational and will teach them a lot. I race karts to. I race a 80cc on the national tour. I built a goped and that was a educational expierence. One thing you are right about is getting the 5hp engine on ebay. Don't let this guy discourage you!!! You'll be just as good off if it dosn't work because you're learn a lot. Keep Thinking!!!

Hi There Can U Guys Help me with some frame plans Hope U Can Help L8ters

-- Stephen v E (eminem_rocks_121@hotmail.com), January 19, 2005.

Ok,heres a few tips and tricks for you..

The best material for the frame is chromolly. Its expensive, but very light and robust. Then, find someone who can TIG weld, this will make the joints stronger and leave a better finish than MIG welding. The frame should be built around the engine,so knowing what power source to use from the offset is essential! The easiest way forward,is to visit your local karting centre who will give you lots of advice! I build one-off machines to order,my last project involved using a motorbike engine,a Honda Fireblade,900cc in a kart.. I had it tested at a dissused runway in yorkshire,0-60mph in 1.8 seconds,0-100mph in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 256mph.The customer was a happy man!

Mannnn you guys dont even know how to weld haaaaaaahaaaaaaa come on if your going to build a frame you need to know how to weld and why dont you just go to a mechanic or something and ask where you can get a pretty good deal on go kart engines ask around people???????

-- im not telling you (car_crazy107@hotmail.com), January 25, 2005.

As I've just written off my m'bike, I should have a 65hp engine lieing around once the insurance co has finished messing around. I thought I might put it in a kart. As I can't weld, I was thinking of using steel tubing, then everywhere I want to "join" putting in a snug fitting wooden plug, drilling right through and bolting everything together. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

-- Oli Howson (oli@badllama.net), January 26, 2005.

has anyone ever built a 750cc go kart. if not i'll be the first. I'm using the back half of a miny dragster frame, and a motor cycle engine.every thing is going to be from scratch.

forget the plans, go to a home depot or whatever and pick up 30 ft of 1 in emc. weld what you think will be a good idea for a frame using pics found online, hope it works, if it doesnt, fix what u did wrong. thats all i did. ive built a few mini bikes and go karts. my new project is a full suspension gokart powered by a gs 450 motorcycle engine. i dont have plans and it will work. im 16 and i say just forget the plans and just learn how everything works before u start building. you cant truly build something until it works. expecially if u dont understand how a centrifical clutch works or how to setup a throttle cable

Your all about 14, its too young,DONT BUY A ENGINE, BUILD THE FRAME FIRST!! u really basic understanding of chains and spockets and how engines work, if u know how to strip a engine donw and rebuild it your half way there,u need a engine with a clutch, your best bet for a engine is a lawnmower engine, cheap powerful(about 5.0bp)... ALSO NONE OF YOU KNOW HOW TO WELD PROPERLY AND HAVE NO CLUE ON ANY THING SO FORGET THE FUCKING GO-KART.... GET A JOB, AND BUY ONE!!

-- ryan - (nO_EMaIL@SORRY.CO.UK), January 30, 2005.

Some way up I read a posting by some halfwit called Randy, downright rude plebs such as as someone caled Steve (burning1973@aol.com) plus the assortment of bigheads, knobjockeys and greasy little scumbags that think just because you're writing into a machine you think you can type dirty words. so this is for all of you simpleton American inbreds who have no idea about common respect or decency, along with everyone here who does want to do something useful with their spare time and learn some basic engineering along the way. Firstly, it is perfectly easy to build a wooden go-kart. No Randy, it is, despite your statement not to do it. Some ground-breaking machines were fabricated from wood, including some very effective racing boats, many devastating war planes (mosquito for example) and the original Marcos racing car (marine ply box sectioned). Like any other material wood has some pretty simple features and as long as you remember to make it with triangulation (a triangle is the strongest geometric shape)then you can be pretty inventive. However, you should think about the joints you use, and bond the pieces together backed up with stiffener plates to make sure nothing comes adrift. Don't go rummaging around in the garage and come out with a load of rusty nails - it won't last five minutes......

Although welding is not that hard to do, if you don't have access to the equipment - and that includes the right safety wear - then I would suggest that you find a frame built by a profesional. There are plenty available for sale from all sorts of sources (eBay is a good start) and it may save you a lot of headaches.

The engine point has been gone over a lot here, but suffice to say an old lawmower engine hasn't really got the guts for the job, so look for something a bit bigger. You can always alter the gearing to suit your personal tastes for speed and acceleration.

But if you want to build your own go-kart, go ahead and do it! Sit down, think about what you need for the machine, how or where you can source the parts, and be realistic about your own capabilities. From there you should be able to learn as you go about the concepts of gearing, braking, tyre angles, and have some great fun on the way!

And for the sneering cretins who abuse the English language in their moronic slapdowns of folk who are interested in stepping away from their PCs for longer than 5 minutes, from someone who lives in the country that invented your mother tongue (and despairs at how you mistreat it), why don't you go outside, try conversing with real people, and talk to them in the same way you do here? Hopefully you'll be gunned down and the world will be saved from committing it's depleting natural resources to prolonging your sad little life. Or perhaps you could blow your brains out in the mistaken belief that an Iron Maiden song is telling you do it when played backwards. Americans seem to like inventing excuses like that.

Thanks jimmy bobby dazzler, you're such a big help you nonce. Why don't you give the people on here a bit of helpful advice instead of writing the crap you just did? Idiot.

-- Daisy McFarner (daisydaisy@volcanomail.com), February 04, 2005.

Kevin, a centrifugal clutch works on two principles - friction and centrifugal force. As an inner spindle rotates it throws out and grips an outer shell, which is attached to the shaft thus turning it.

And I think you would need something rather more powerful than an 8hp motor if you want to have burnouts. Besides which a go-kart, due to the mass centred on the driven wheels, won't relly do.

-- Daisy McFarner (daisydaisy@volcanomail.com), February 04, 2005.

Grant, for steering the simplest option is to have a rod actuated system - don't start thinking about a rack from a car or something, too much complexity and weight! I would suggest you look at some pics of the web to get an idea of how karts steer as this will give you an idea. A question for you - have your wheel hubs got lugs or holes to attach the steering linkage to? Rather than go from the steering wheel down, its better if you think from the front wheels back to the steering wheel.

Everone building a Go-cart from scratch. Find a person who welds. Get enough metal as in 1" pipe and a steel plate dont use aluminum unless you have an aluminum welder. Go to stores and examine the structures. make sure you have a horizontal engine. LAWN MOWER engines will work if you have an axe with a trans mission with a belt pulley. Find somes tires and wheels like off of a lawn mower. smaller the tires the more axceleration. Bigger tires make more top speed. Make sure to tune your engines otherwise the will not run correctly or blow up. Vertical shafted engines have to be vertical in oreder for the oil pump to pick up the oil and horizontal engines are horizontal. good luck. And to all the dumb fucks who thank you are better than the other, if you go a smart ass comment than don't put it in and don't send me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ummm my pops works at holiday rock and builds things out of steel every day i have seen some of the shit him and his crew do to get the rock plant up and running again it makes monster garrage look easy. We also built a mini sand rail from scratch it looks similar to the ones you can see at www.desertkarts.com it has a 185 atc engine in it a 5 speed semi automatic transmission in it similar to that of a trail 50 or 70 it has 14 inches of wheel travel in the front and 10 in the rear a real class 1 car or top of the line 75,000 dollar off road or sand car www.sandbullet.com has about 21 inches of travel and i guarentee that my car will spank yours dirt or street n e day except for you guys out there wiht 250 shifter carts mine wouldent touch that on the streets. But mine halls ass and keeps up with the big buggies and i feel sorry for you wihtout maveric mecanic dads you wont have anywhere to learn this kinda stuff from and welding is easy i have been doing it science i was like 10 years old and if you dont know how an engine works you should never return to this forum i have been watching my dad fix stuff science before i could eaven talk dont eaven mess with the 5 hp briggs get a motorcycle engine a small honda no clutch but it has gears eaven a smaller 11o honda has 8 hp compared to a 200 brigs with 5 hp and the honda will out rev it any day and it is dum to build a street cart ull get in trouble by the police just like i did on my CR 80 and that guy who said he has a 4 stroke 250 with 45 hp i dont think so a CR 250 race bike (2stroke) has 45 hp so no way a 4 stroke does (14)

Hello there i am building a go kart and i have got a generator engine because it has power speed, and i have just started to take it apart but i can see where the ht lead goes if some1 can help me i would be more than gratefull..... thks

-- tomas banks (scoottpayten@hotmail.com), February 18, 2005.

Hi Kevin, a little unsure about your mail. Depends on the amount of power but I would guess that all you need is a single brake on the driven wheel to make it all stop safely. What you need to remember is that you need to have the brake disc (I'll assume this type instead of a drum) physically attached to the driveshaft connecting the wheels, so you need to have a flange on the driveshaft that it will bolt to, along with a mounting for the caliper. As you can see it starts looking a bit of a job with welding etc, so consider a drum brake instead, preferably one that was on the rear of a car so it has a handbrake lever on it. That way you could use this by a cable instead of using hydraulics, and the stopping power should be pretty good. Even better, you only need to make sure that the driveshaft spins the drum, and the rest of the unit can be located pretty easily. Whilst I don't know your frame design and how you have connected everything together take a look at these steps first. This way, if you try and work it out logically you might see a way around the problem. Something to remember. Brakes are more important than power. It's all very well making the kart go, but it's useless if you can't make it stop again!

Hope this helps, Daisy

-- Daisy McFarner (daisydaisy@volcanomail.com), February 18, 2005.

The engine needs the ht lead on it first wich i need help wiht because i can t se where it goes into so if some1 could send me a pic of the bit that u put the ht lead into i would be more than gratefull thks...

-- tomas banks (scottpayten@hotmail.com), February 18, 2005.

Tomas, I'm making a complete guess but if you're stripping the engine then are you looking for a ht point or the spark plug ead point? If it's a single cylinder then you wouldn't necessarily have a coil etc, it all generates from the ignition system which will possibly take off from the crank or the camshaft somewhere.

-- Daisy McFarner (daisydaisy@volcanomail.com), February 18, 2005.

i have seen the magneto on it and there and bout 3 wirse comeing out but that is it

-- tomas (scoottpayten@homail.com), February 18, 2005.

mmmmmm, I can only suggest two things from here. Look at the colours and determine their type (live, neutral, earth). Secondly, try searching either for information on the engine or try the manufacturer to see if they have a wiring diagram for the motor. Whoever ripped it off may have done so for a reason. Do you know the previous owner?

Daisy

-- Daisy McFarner (daisydaisy@volcanomail.com), February 18, 2005.

No sorry i dont no the previous owner but i will try looking on the engine for a no. and i will see if i can get a diagram up.Do u no if generator engines will be enought power for a gokart and it dont have a clutch so i will just do a direct drive system to the back axel via.. chain then just bump start it i will let u no how i get on thks for all your help... Tomas

-- tomas (scoottpayten@hotmail.com), February 19, 2005.

start with some 1-inch. pipes and a welder with a box type frame.

-- Bob (Hotwheelsco@aol.com), February 20, 2005.

Best bet is to find out what you can about the engine - a model number should help you discover the hp rating etc. Really you want 4 as a minimum for any decent speed. Direct drive is normally for racing versions, I wouldn't recommend having that on something for fun as you'll want to stop from time to time!

All the best, Daisy

it ain't that hard to build a go-kart, u don't need plans either. Just cut some tubint that is a foot or so longer than you legs are long. Then weld it in a rectangle, with it wider than ur body. Weld an engine mount in the back. Put on a seat, put on 4 wheels and away you go.

Your the idiot scootty, if you're so clever build a web site yourself. Seeing as you probably can't don't criticise others for trying. Stupid boy.

Hello there best way i think to build a go kart is to make not to big not to small chassis out of inch binch box section weld it al together. Then the neext thing to do is think bout steering get a old ride on lanwmower and take all of the steering off of that so its all nice and sturdy. Then u want to think bout putting your back axle on get a peace of pipe with the wall of atleast 1mm thick because there is going to be loads of strane going threw that back axle then get a cog off of a motorbike wheel then weld that on aswell to the axel make sure it is dead straight. Then u can ither buy or make your own bearing to hold the axle. Then u will be thinking bout making engine mounts up get some more box section and make it to fit the engine and bolt it to the engine and weld it to the frame, seat use a old kitchen chair or something, petrol tank just get 1 off of a motorbike and fix that up, then for the belly pan if u want 1get some quarter inch cold rold still (sheet metal) and rivit to the frame, put your chain on and if u want some brakes just get some off of a small motorbike ect,50cc,125cc,250 and so have ya then think bout wheels just get them off of a ride on lawnmower aswell..IF U HAVE ANY PROBLEMS OR ANY QUESTIONS PLZ EMAIL ME AT scoottpayten@hotmail.com I've jsut started to make a petrol scooter with a 50cc brushcutter engine on it with a clutch, i just used the clutch bell housing and just grinding it on the back will.It works grate and pulls 2people with ease i had a race with a 50cc motorbike and it beat it my peds does bout roughtly 40-60mph at a rought gusse and if any1 wants to see any pics of that plz email me at scoottpayten@hotmail.com.I also made a pusbike with a j.a.p engine on it grinding ont the back wheel with a door hinge. It did'nt go very quick but it was'nt nothing to do with speed that1 it was just funny using it.Then another project i done was to get the same egine again as i had on the other push bike and put it on a bmk bike that had more power because the wheel was bigger wich ment u get more revolutions to the engine and that went well i had all the same stuff on it aswell.Me and my mate are in the progress of making a gokart with a 400cc motorbike engine on it wich will do bout 90- 100mph easy.I am making a site soon and i will post them all on there thks...

wot do u mean Daisy McFarner

-- thomas (scoottpayten@hotmail.com), March 07, 2005.

Scooty, before I thought you were just a stupid little boy. I now see that you are capable of stringing several badly spelt words together, which makes you a rather comic figure.

Sadly for you though, the joke is on you, you poor sad little juvenile. I used to have to work with a big-headed, arrogant, smart- alec like you. He thought he knew everything and that everyone else on the drivetrain team was inferior to him, sarcastic and rude to anyone asking for help. He got sacked when they found out he was all mouth and didn't know the basics really. You should try and learn from that.

But you won't as you have your head up your own tail. Sad little brat. Help others, or shut your mouth.

would it be smart to put my 580cc' snowmobile engine on a go kart or a glof kart?? i always wounderd if they would let a 80 hp golf cart on a course??

-- nick (slipknotrulz085@yahoo.com), March 07, 2005.

Snow mobile engines are ownly really made for power and torque not speed!!!!!!!

-- thomas (scoot@p..m), March 08, 2005.

yer that would be gd on a gokart

-- steve (rats@wanadoo.co.uk), March 11, 2005.

Nick, you might think such a large engine on a small frame would be good fun but in fact you'd be quite wrong. Take a look at a typical frame and consider the flexing it goes through just to cope with one person and a relatively small engine on board. When you multiply the power and torque with such a large unit then without a complete rethink of the degree of bracing required - plus axle location - concept would be dangerous. And we haven't got round to the brakes yet!

It's a nice idea - make that an outrageous one - but in reality you'd be best going for something manageable. The torque coming from the engine would probably twist it to bits. By the way, torque in a kart is highly important - arguably more so than outright power, as you need this to be able to set off and have a decent reponse lower down, additionally it provides for a more flexible and enjoyable drive. High speed isn't everything despite what you may first think......you need a balance between the two, but go for something that thumps along nicely.

I have plans made to build an offroad go-kart, and put a 377 Rotax engine on it. It gonna be great Go-Kart when its finished. Im making it so in the winter i can put half tracks on it. Im using the primary, seconday clutches out of a snowmobile, and the chain case.

-- Coltin Gray (Problem_child1238@hotmail.com), March 15, 2005.

Order yourself 80 feet of .090 wall 1 inch tubin, get an overhead picture of the kart/frame you want to build. cut 10 to 20 2inch sections of tubing to practice on. once your comfortable with the welds take the overhead picture and enlarge it so that you can build it to scale. Get yourself a 1/2 inch piece of plywood BUILD A JIG tack weld all the pieces together. Use STRING check for straightness. Start looking for steering components. I just finished building a Jr. Dragster for my son the original picture was 3 inches long of the roll cage the rest I built with the paper and pencil. Good Luck. Don't get into a hurry it's your butt that can accelerate over 60mph with a sloppy 5hp Briggs.
