greenspun.com : LUSENET : CountrySide Family : One Thread

well, the new chicks are doing well,, the youngest ones,, got wig tip feather,, OVERNIGHT,,, I cheked yesterday,,,,they wernt there,, this morning, they where there.

I also have been noticing, that 2 of the chickens, so far, that when they get near me,, and I make a sudden move,, or noise,, they squat down,, and dont move, till , either I pick them up,, or move away from them. Its kinda strange looking. ONe of the Barred Rocks, I had before did this,,, but she thought she was a pet or something,, and always was underfoot, looking for food,, but, when chopping wood,,, she could get in the way. I didnt notice any other bird doing this, till just recently,, anyone else have this with your flock? or heard of somthing like it?

What can I say except, your chickens love ya. LOL A few of ours do this too and yes they think they're pets, who's going to tell them different.

I didnt have to do the "cold shower" on her, I locked her out of the coop for a few hours each day, and in 2 days,, she stopped.,, But Ill have to remember that one,,,

I have a rooster that LOVES the whole family (especially me :0)! He follows me EVERYWHERE around the farm and even comes to the doors and windows of the house looking for us. He rides with me in the pony cart and lets me pick him up. Yesterday I was gone most of the day and when I got home he ran across the yard to me and did his one wing down rooster dance for me! In the evening aroun roost time he will circle me trying to get me to go roost with him LOL.(my husband is threatining to oust him out of jelousy, haha) Really he is a valued family pet. Patti

Hi, I have a gold laced wyandotte that was given to me about a year ago. I have noticed the squat thing when we go to pet her. She has been put into a pen with some other hens and doesn't do it as often, but when we had her by herself, she was like a cat wanting to be petted. When you went to pet her, she squatted and spread her wings. I thought I was the only one to have a psychotic chicken like that. Lori

Hmmm, most of my hens do that, but none of them are even remotely treated as pets since I don't like them much... I noticed that the few dominant hens don't squat, but the low-ranking ones do. It almost seems like the squatting is some sort of submissive thing, and of course it's also what they do when the rooster comes calling (same deal, right?)

I have three chickens a buff orpington,a barred rock, and a white Leghorn. All i raised since they were five days old. They lived in my back yard for the longest time and grew very found of my family and I especially me since i was mom!Anywhoo they would jump up on my shoulder and sleep, or jump into my arms to be held they were very loving birds and still are to this day,now that they are down at my barn with my horse they act more like real chickens should but they still follow me around and love to be held.

I have two bantams and they too do the squatting thing when I come near them. I guess that's good - they used to run away when I got near them. Haha its kind of funny. I guess if your chicken does this it means they love ya!

My chickens do the squatting thing too. When we introduced two baby chicks they quit. When those baby chicks were gone ( I think ferrel cats got them) they started again. It must me a less dominate submissive thing.

My question is, I have three hens. One has started sitting in the coop all day long. She barely comes out to eat and drink. It's very hot here in the southwest. She has done that twice recently, the first time for a week or so. Now she just started again.
