Butterfly up close

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

How do you get these buggers to sit still? I was pretty lucky, as in the past week there was a real flood of butterflies here, and some actually let me come close for a couple of seconds before fluttering off. The things that irritate me most about this photo are the fact that the butterfly was sitting with it's eyes away from the sun, making it's head very dark, and that the "trunk" is right over the leg.

Interesting shot. Butterflies are less active early in the cool morning. Don't try to get close to them. Stay where you are when they flitter away, and they will probably be right back or stake out a plant that is attractive to them.

Colorful shot. The depth of field is not quite enough here. The big spot on the wing needs to be in focus for it to be a really good shot. Did you use a tripod?

Cheers

No tripod. Those few seconds that the butterflies actually did stay put were barely enough to move in and take the shot.

You don't need a tripod. What you need is flash.
