How Was I to Know?

(Just another set of thoughts scribbled on the Net.)

Smoke drifted through the bar's stale air, the neon signs advertising beers glinting off of shotglasses and the sticky bar. He sat at the far end, his back to the wall, toying with the beer bottle in front of him. Most of the label lay in shreds around his coaster, and his thick black hair fell messily from constant rufflings by his hand. Now, as the jutebox started up again, he sighed, expecting the same techno pounding as before.

To his surprise, the mellow tones of a country song began, and the chords struck hard at his heart. " Well I hoped and I prayed, I loved you from afar, I cried, and I dreamed, wished on every star But nothin' I'd do got me closer to you. So I locked all my feelings inside..." By sheer will, he pushed back the tears, remembering all too well his own situation, leading to this night in this seedy bar. Her auburn hair shining like gold fire in the setting sun, those deep green eyes gazing at him with complete love....and his focus on the cheap blonde with the red dress. " Well how was I to know, you never let it show, what a beauty like you might see, in a poor boy like me, how could I have seen you walk out of my dreams, shine your light on my sleepin' heart, and into my soul, how was I to know...." He dropped his head, hiding his eyes with his hand as sheer agony wracked his heart, remembering that night. The blonde, drunk and jealous, standing at his door. Her watching, those green eyes dull with pain. Him, with a hangover and no memory...it flashed after that....the scream as the blonde went for her with curled fingers...his own hand, grasping the gun...the blonde's sudden lunge towards him....the flash of that beautiful auburn hair...an explosion and gun smoke in his eyes....then a soft gurgle and the spurt of blood across his face...the salty, coppery taste as he knelt...the life fading from those beautiful green eyes... He dropped his head onto the bartop, letting a tear fall to spatter the filthy floor as the song's lyrics stabbed deeper than any dagger could hope to reach. " How could I have seen, you walk out of my dreams, shine your light on my sleepin' heart, and into my soul, how was I to know..."
