Hostboard vs Lusenet; your opinion?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Troll-free Private Saloon : One Thread

Just a question, since we will eventually have to leave this server.

My opinion:

Hostboard: it now runs at a reasonable rate and has these cute inserts.

Lusenet: I like the fact that I have always been listed as one of the top posters. It is easy. When I had to go to Europe this spring, I didn't see a computer for 4 days. When I got back, I found that I had posted 15 times. Some of my posts were witty, some were boring and some were insulting. So a board that allows me to be a a top poster, without having to post, is a plus. My guess is that I post about a third of my posts.

Would, I want to give that up on Hostboard; I don't know; might be a good idea, although they will let me change my name to Uncle Deadah. ;<)))

do you have a link? Are you talking about creating a new forum on hostboard or merging with an existing one?

I hate cute inserts. I hate "cute", period. Humbug!

Lars, if this is Lars:

I am talking about Unk's Wild Wild West backup board on Host board.

Unk's

Most of the regulars are registered there.

Yeah, it's me. I'd forgotten about that place. Thanks. I think I'll stay here until the crowd moves on. When it is working, I still prefer Lusenet.

Especially now that the troll may be gone.

You keep telling us that we'll have to leave, the board's going down, you won't be surprised if it's gone in two weeks, bail, bail, blah blah blah blah.

Jeez, you sound like a doomer.

How about we just stick with Lusenet until Phil finally decides to pull the plug? So far, there's nothing new on his homepage to suggest that he's finally decided to close.

What:

According to Phil [in May], he is in Alaska and other places. He won't be back until October. In Dec 2001, he said the place would no longer be supported after the photo sites were moved. They have been moved.

I know nothing more. If you want to know more, contact Brian. He is in charge of Photo.net and Lusenet. Maybe he will tell you.

If you don't like it here you can leave Z. End of story.

By-the-by:

The full name is Brian Mottershead . He is at an MIT address, which I don't have at the moment. You can contact him through photo.net. Perhaps he can answer your question.

Of course you could always go here:

Dennis Board

Haven't read the board in a long time, so this might not be representative. Evidendly, Dennis is removing things based on content; shades of Chuck on the Yourdan board. Not that I would defend the content of the stuff that I've seen Sheri post; then I don't look at the board that much so I don't know.

I hate that hostboard format.

Of course for a different view you could go to:

Different

Your guess is as good as mine.

According to Phil [in May], he is in Alaska and other places. He won't be back until October. In Dec 2001, he said the place would no longer be supported after the photo sites were moved. They have been moved.

And yet, greenspun.com was down for about 3 days and now it's back up. In order for it to be back up, someone most likely had to bring it up. To me, this qualifies as "support."

I know nothing more.

That much is obvious.

Cut Z a frigging break y'all.

The guy posted a link for anyone who might care to keep in touch if (when?) this place finally croaks, and has also shared what info he has on the afore mentioned possibility of this joint closing.

Some people's kids need a trip to the woodshed. And I'm just the guy to do it, c'mere ya lil fucker!

Hostboard is a dog, too junked up with all kinds of extra crap and bullshit. The beauty of this forum is its simplicity, and the price is right.

-- (no@complaints.here), July 19, 2002.

I tried to register at hostboard and couldn't. It wouldn't let me pick a name, any name. What a pain! Any hints Z?

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), July 19, 2002.

If you read the "different" link that I provided, it says that CCM is moving [among other things] the discussion groups from the arsdigita server to Red Hat.
