Microphone advice

Hi. I need some advice on purchasing a mic. I have absolutely no experience in audio engineering. All the advice I have sought has resulted in rhetoric I don't fully understand. I need a unidirectional mic; it will be used mainly for recording dialoque, no folies or ambiece. I can only afford to buy one mic and have about $600 to blow. What is best: unidirectional, supercardioid, or hypercardioid? There are a few mics I've been looking at, but does anyone have recommendations?

Why do you need unidirectional if it's for dialogue? Try getting a Senheiser 416 shotgun mic. Bit pricey though. Try 2nd hand. Seems to be the industry standard for v/o's.

As pro audio engineer, (amateur videographer) I recommend the Electro Voice (EV) RE 2000 it's in your price range ($600. US) and it has 2 advantages. It's a high end studio quality condenser and it has it's own phantom power supply--rare and convenient. This allows me to use it on a speaker while simultaneously using the stereo mic in my XL1s to capture the background ambient sound of the audience...ideal combo for a lecture.
