A machine brake is not required for a vertical platform lift if a self locking drive utilizing a lead screw, worm or other positive gearing which will stop and hold the platform with the rated load within how many inches of down travel after the power is removed? Also need the reference #.

I am assuming you mean elevator and not platform lift. In the A17.1-2000 Section 8.7.4.1 any alteration must comply with all requirements of Section 4.1 . The rated speeds listed in Table 4.1.9.1 (Minimum and Maximum Stopping Distances for Rack and Pinion Type Safeties With Rated Load) go as high as 2,000 ft/min, but there is no maximum rated speed stated in Section 4.1. Maybe I'm missing something.
