It sounds like you're not in San Francisco or you could look in the old city directories yourself.

Kurt Iversen , if you're out there, can you do your usual lightening search of the old directories?

I sort of remember seeing The Grand Central Hotel, but can't remember where it was. Just going by the name, it might have been on the site of Grand Central Antiques at 1632 Market St. Hotels near that address now are: the Edwardian San Francisco Hotel at 1668 Market St, the Ascot Hotel at 1657 Market St and the Allen Hotel at 1693 Market St (those last two sound suspiciously like wino housing).

In the 1880s there was a "Grand Central Hotel" that was also called the "Fulton Hotel." I don't find a Fulton Hotel listed. I think the place was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake.

Hunting tip: When you find an address that looks like the one you want, put it into Yahoo Maps and Driving Directions. Click to get the map, scroll down the right hand side of the page and you'll find a "Find Nearby" listing. Click whatever business it is you're looking for and you'll get a listing in ascending order of distance from your inquiry address. The first group of listings will be paid ones (advertising), so scroll past them.

You're right it seems to have disappeared from the directories. The last listing is 1994 at 1412 Market. The building is still there and still houses the Mecca for Civil Service Sandwich eaters-- Quincy's Sandwiches.

The Grand Central Sauna is still open at 15 Fell. This is in the same building as the hotel-- back door, though.

Goold luck in your research.

The building still exists. It may be a HOSTEL now. I'm not sure. I pass it daily on my way to work. But the Grand Central Hotel (company) no longer exists.
