Doulas/aspiring doulas in Mississippi

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Doula.Com General Discussion : One Thread

I live in Jackson, MS and am in the beginning stages of training to be a doula. There are few of us in this state, and no actual doula practices that I am aware of. I have found a wonderful doula in the area who is taking on the role of being my mentor and has mentioned starting her own doula practice and training other doulas to join her. What I am looking for is other doulas or aspiring doulas in the Area that might want to have coffee and trade books, videos, training steps, etc. E-mail buddies are great too! Connections are the best way to learn and to get on the right track to being a doula! Hope to hear from someone!

Candi,

Did I train with you via ALACE on the Gulfcoast in 2002 with Renate Hillman as the host? This is some miles away, but Meg Evans (now married and last name is Hayden) lives in Oxford, MS. She has a doula practice and is now apprenticing with a midwife, but very much wants to expand her doula practice. She told me just day before yesterday that the most difficult issue in Oxford (and maybe this is true for Jackson) is that most people don't know what a doula is, especially doctors and nurses. Education is going to be key in getting your practice started.

I recommend volunteering to speak on doula's and their work at the UofM Medical Center, and also go to that liberal arts private college campus in Jackson (forget the name) to offer a "brown bag lunch series" teaching anyone who will listen to you.

It could be as simple as handing out your business cards and or brochure after talking for 15-20 minutes and the role of a doula in labor and delivery. Word spreads fast in Jackson (I lived there for a year, so I know) and before you know it, you will be getting calls.

Email me privately, and I will get you in touch with Meg. Good Luck! Amelia
