Answers

Check the chapter on Drives and Motives by Charles N. Cofer in Gregory A. Kimble & Kurt Schlesinger (Eds.), Topics in the History of Psychology, Volume 2 (Lawrence Erlbuam, 1985).

You'll also find some answers if you check an encyclopedia or dictionary of psychology for the topic "dynamic psychology," which includes both the concept of motivation as a drive and as a mediating variable in learning theory (as an "organism" variable etween stimulus and response)and the kinds of motivation associated with the notion of the unconscious.

Of course you'll find even more detail in a textbook on motivation. Good luck!
