Over the Fence Chat for 6-8-02

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Style Homesteading : One Thread

Mornin' folks! Since Phil is (was), out of town, thought I'd start this thread up for the week. So, whatch all been up to?

We finally got some needed rain the other day. It came down in buckets for a short while, but it was nice to have rain. The potatoes are dying down, so yesterday I thought I'd dig a few up and see what I got. Yeah!!! Potatoes!!! We had some for supper last night and they were soooooo good. I'm going to give them another week or so and I should be able to harvest most all of them. Of course, I'll be sneaking out and getting enought for supper every night. :) Also noticed that I've got some little tomatoes coming on and teeny green beans. I put out a type of green bean that mature pretty much at the same time, so I'm hoping to get another batch planted as soon as these are ready and picked.

I got my first photography lesson from Dave the other day, and I never realized how complicated taking pictures could be. He has some really old manual Nikons, and you have to do every thing to set up the picture! I'm hoping they don't all come out blurry or under/over exposed. We shall see! I've been wanting to take pictures of the garden and some plants I don't know what they are. Maybe I can get them loaded on here and you all could help identify them? There's one plant in particular. It doesn't look like a weed and I'm thinking it's a relic from the old herb garden I tried to start a few years back. It's tall, stately looking, and has medium sized, yellow cupped flowers on the stalks. Really beautiful, just haven't figured out what in the heck it is.

I'm finally getting over this cold/bronchitis. This is the 2nd time I've got it from Laura in about a month. I'm so glad she's out of school and maybe I can stay healthy for awhile. I've got so much to do and don't have time for these colds! Especially this time of year.

Well, that's enough yakking on my part. Hope you all are having a great day and are enjoying this wonderful time of year.

Well, we have dropped to having rain just once a week or so, so spring is more or less over and I have started carrying water to the garden over at Phils' place. The grass is now long enough so that I was able to get a start on mulching to preserve water, but I still have a long ways to go. My potatos are barely blooming and the beans are just barely up, so that garden has a ways to go, yet. We picked the peas, which are dying in the heat, so that part is finished. Mulberries are ripe and very good this year, though it takes a long time to pick a reasonable amount.

My old rooster has been gradually getting bad tempered over the last 2 years, so after I finish collecting eggs for hatching this years chicks the junior rooster will be expected to be promoted into Boss Chicken. It's a shame, really, the old one has done a good job of fatherhood, but all things must come to an end, and most chickens would have KILLED to live a life like Rusty Red Rockets!

It's too early to tell, but it might be a good blackberry year, which will be really great as I have a decent market for what my family cannot use. I am REALLY looking foreward to having fresh berries, berry topping, berry pie, and gallons of frozen berries in the freezer! YUM!!

Hi everyone.

Phew, I don't seem to have much time for the computor now that some decent weather has arrived here in new Hampshire.

I am still finding it hard to get much done around here. Seems like as soon as I get home from work it decideds to rain (it happens to be raining right now, and you guessed it, I just got home from work).

I went to the Vermont dairy goat sale and picked up another goat. I now have 5 goats. I enjoy watching them play, especially after a hectic day at work.

It looks like I will be changing jobs soon. Instead of working 3 minutes from home I will have to travel 21 minutes. I have been spoiled by the short trip to work. Twenty-one minutes seems like a long drive now, but I remember the days of traveling ten miles to work in Miami during rush hour and it taking two hours. This country life has spoiled me for sure.

I have the vegetable gardens planted, and the moles are unplanting right behind me. Thanks to all the rain we have been getting, the gardens are off to a good start (except for the moles).

I have been very sore for the past couple of days. My rooster decided he needed a fighting buddy, I put up a good fight, but finally I had to give up, I was getting my butt kicked. He (the rooster) is now king of the hill. He better do as good a job at beating the fox off.

I am off to do whatever it is I do when it rains (I seem to never remember doing much when it rains). Check in later.

Annie, good luck with the photography. Maybe someday you will have a picture book out.

Bye, George a.k.a Thunder :-)
