Has anyone had a problem with using the 420 attached to a slave unit. I find that it fires for one shot only and then must be switched off and on agaain before the next shot. The camera and flash are set to manual.

This has come up here before and, yes, it's sadly typical behaviour for Canon flash units.

Two things to try; Use tape to make sure none of the other contacts are shorting out. Buy an Ikelite Lite-Ling TTL slave. They always work and you can even use it in wireless TTL mode if you want.
