how many Jockey Houses still exist in Ingleside?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

I believe I live in one of the Ingleside race way Jockey houses and was hoping someone had some (any) info/ pictures they could share w/ me. It's not @ 280 Byxbee, but it's in the area.

I also uncovered a fair amount of SF Examiners circa 1904 (one section of a Philly, PA paper 1896) lining the walls (under countless layers of wall paper, paint and paneling). Removed what I could intact. Once I get a chance to read them I'll share the wealth! i.e. advertisement:

"visit Dr. Jordan's Great Museum of Anatomy" at 1051 Market Street "The largest anatomical museum in the word! Weaknesses or any contracted disease positivily cured by the oldest specialist of the coast!"

or

"FREE MORPHINE TO CURE DRUNKENESS"

Thanks!

Robert, could you scan these in (in sections) and put them on the web so we could look at them? Aside from the text of articles, most of the thrill of reading old newspapers is the layout and graphics (not to mention the choices made in wording headlines).

Thanks! Rosa

PS: You can get a free Yahoo photo album on line. Click on Photos at the top of the Yahoo home page (it's in the section that's in little teensy type).

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the old Ingleside race track was on a street called Urbano and that one of the houses on the Western half like 380 Urbano was a main house or maybe jockey house though in a way that wouldn't really make sense since you'd think the jockey house would be on the southern and long side of Urbano and not on a turn. It's also strange to me why the city planners left the outlines of the race track for the street itself and not turn it into a regular grid pattern.

Not an answer but another question: Anybody know how/when the Ingleside district got its name?

I know someone who lives on 35 Corona, and it's kind of in the middle of the track itslef. Go to outsidelands.org and read the "Streetwise" column.

Good night and have a pleasant tomorrow.

Regarding the naming of the Ingleside district. I believe it was named after the racetrack. Ingleside means "fireside". If we can figure out how the racetrack name was chosen we'll be in good shape.

Pre-racetrack maps I've seen label the area as Lake View. Interestingly, most young people I know refer to the Ingleside/Merced Heights/Ingleside Heights neighborhoods collectively as Lakeview, while older people tend to call it Ingleside. Of course most of the City calls it the Sunset which kind of pisses me off.
