sync falure/D30

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Minutes ago my D30 body finally stoped syncing either the pc cord or the hot shoe. I had been using a radio slave thinkingthis was the issue. When suddenly, finally after making so many no sync shots, it has failed completely? is this common in this bdy, it is three years old, but has no seen that much sync? And who best services this body? I am in nyc.

Thanks so much enrique cu

The D30 (like all EOS cameras) has a hot shoe rated for no more than 6 volts for the sync trigger. The radio slave is most likely safely under this limit, but many non-dedicated flashes and studio strobes are way over 6 volts and thay are certaily capable of frying your camera's flash circuit. Sometimes this happens with only one use but sometimes only after repeated use.

So I guess the question is, did you attach a flash unit directly to the hot shoe, or indirectly to the hot shoe through a hot shoe to PC adapter? If so, what was the sync voltage of the connected flash? It's easy to use a good volt meter to check this.

Wein makes a device called a Safe-Sync for doing this safely regardless of what the sync voltage is.

Also, some strobes have a polarity that is reversed from what Canon EOS cameras can use. Make sure that's not your problem first.
