EOS 1V as additional camera

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Has someone a view as to whether I should consider an EOS 1V at the moment. Have been toying with the idea of eventually going digital, but I think it's still early days. As I already have an EOS 1, excellent condition camera, and an EOS 650, is there a great deal extra I would gain by having the EOS 1V. I shoot weddings, landscapes, travel, candids, and architecture. Thanks for your opinions.

The EOS 1V offers plenty of improvements. The question is whether you need them or not.

As compared to the EOS 1, the 1V offers better metering, drastically improved AF (including the ability to AF at F8), better weather sealing, higher framerates and shorter release lag/viewfinder blackout, E-TTL flash metering, more robust shutter, etc

It's up to you to decide whether these things are useful to you. You might also want to look at the EOS 3, which has 95% of the capability of the EOS 1V, at 50% the price. The EOS 3 also offers Eye-control.

I own a 1VHS and a 3. In retrospect I wish I had bought a second 1V over the 3. The 1VHS is a great camera to work with. I find it is nice to have the vertical release, as I shoot at least 1/3 of my images in vertical format. I also find the eye piece shutter much more convienient than using the slide on cover supplied with the 3. It is hard to describe, but the overall build and feel of the 1V is quite remarkable. It is built and sealed like a tank. The 3 is a fine camera, but you only have to use both for a few frames to realize that there is a very significant difference between the two.

I agree with your view of the digital world. I still shoot film, and probably will until they get digital bodies to perform with lenses 1:1 so my ultra wides remain ultra wide. I would love the magnification at the tele-photo end, but not enough to give up the wide perspective.

Instead of buying a new 1V I would go for a second hand D30 digital body. That's what I did half a year ago. Now I use my 1n HS for landscapes but I go digital for the time critical work like sports. You will be able to find a lot of good condition D30 for the same price or even less a new 1V now after release of the D60. And if you are not happy with going digital you can sell the D30 again without loosing to much money. Just give digital a try, I can't think about not having it anymore!!!
