greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Hi all. I am wanting to buy a nice and 'good' camera. I went to the local camera shop and told they guy my goals. I am a mother of 2 so I take TONS of pictures, and I am planing on going to college in the photgraphy field and Hopefully maybe start a studio in my home ( all future plans ) Anyways, He mentioned a Canon EOS 650. Has anyone used this camera before? Would you recomend it? or a differnt one? Any and all adivce/help would be appreciated becuase of right now I know NOTHING about cameras and I need help! Thanks, Ashley

The 650 is a really old camera by autofocus standards dating back to the late 1980s. They're generally sturdy (aside from common shutter failure problems - gluey black oil on them) but don't give you much a newer camera doesn't.

Personally I see no reason to go for something like that. If you're starting out I'd look into getting something newer, like a Rebel 2000 or Elan II with a 50mm 1.8 lens.

Have a look at:

I'm not sure why he recommended the EOS 650. Like NK Guy mentioned, it's an old camera and you would definitely have to find it used. Did you specifically tell him you wanted to buy used or in a particular price range? A much better choice would be an Elan 7, Rebel 2000, or Elan II. The Elan II was just recently discontinued and replaced by the Elan 7, but you can still find them new at some places. All three of these cameras are very capable and modern. The Rebel 2000 is Canon's current entry-level camera. The Elan 7 is more for the intermediate to advanced shooter who wants better construction and more features. The Elan II is quite comparable to, and in some areas even better than, the Elan 7. For a good starter camera with room for growth, get either the Elan 7 or Elan IIe.

The important question is what is your budget? Knowing this we can reccomend an ideal camera\lens combo. JC

I am a student of photography (arn't we all!) and I purchased an elan 7 to do my studies. It's a great body to learn the eos system on, but for the money, I would have served coffee a couple more months and got an eos 3. If your on a tight budget, then the elan II/elan 7 will be more then enough to grow with, but if your thinking a bit farther a head, an eos 3 would suit that studio you dream of better.

i have owned many 35mm slr's...i also had the eos II...sold it and bought the 7e...i like the ergonomics of the 7e and some of its custom features better than the II..I concur somewhat with what jef above says with one exception..there's not very much difference in features between the 7e and 3 except for the 3 being larger, heavier and a more solid camera...if you really want to buy a rig for years to come....wash some extra dishes...bus a few more table and save your schekels (sp) for a 1V....now we're talking!
