Hi! Really looking forward to give the OCDB software a go. I normally use MacIntosh (disctracker) but as a rookie PC user I need to catalogue and organize my CD roms for the PC as well. The most important function for me with this type of software utility is being able to find old backup files. After testing the Sample catalogue it seems like you have to be very specific with filenames. As far as I can see you need to write the exact name of the file to find it in the catalogue, including suffix. If this is correct are you working on a more powerful search function? I have problems remebering exact names of backupfiles after 2-3 months,and a more powerful search tool would really improve the OCDB.

The search function in Offline CD Browser is actually very powerful, but perhaps not all that user friendly, especially for newcomers to the PC world. You see, the search function is based on the old (but still largely used) search syntax of the MS-DOS. It enables you to get exactly what you are looking for, and is not very hard to learn.

It has two special characters and works like this: The question mark (?) works like a wildcard, hence a search for ‘file?.txt’ will return both ‘file1.txt’ and ‘file2.txt’. The asterisk character (*) works like one or more wildcards, hence a search for ‘file*.txt’ will return both ‘file1.txt’ and ‘filesecond.txt’. So, to search for a file containing ‘saturday’ type ‘*saturday*’; both file ‘Herbaliser - Saturday Night.mp3’ and ‘my saturday with dad.bmp’ will be returned. The question mark and the asterisk character can of course be combined like this: ‘*all*documents type ?.mp?’.
