Value of Limited Edition Canon EOS 10s

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I am wondering what a fair price to ask would be as well as the best place to advertise this camera: it is a limited edition - my friend told me Canon had made only 2500 of them. I had a certificate of authenticity saying such. It is a matted silver camera w/ a 35-135mm lens.

I would appreciate any advice.

I don't think it will have much additional value over a regular 10s. They really aren't expensive enough to be "collectors" items like Leicas are. I expect you might be able to get a few more dollars for it but I'd estimate the value at around $300 for the lens and body, maybe $400 if you can find someone who really wants the "limited edition".

Check Ebay and see what prices you find there.

KEH.com often have one of these in stock. You might want to track what they sell them for.

Back in 1990, I owned two EOS 10S cameras and have many fond memories and chromes. They were really fine cameras for their time. That was the camera that made me sell my Nikon equipment. The 3 point AF of the EOS 10S was the truly reliable AF system after the EOS 1. Heck, the AF is more dependable than a new Elan 7 or D30.

The trouble with old 10S cameras--even if rarely used--is the shutter bumper tends to melt and spread sticky goo on the shutter blades. The fix is a $150 shutter. Nearly every one I've seen in local used camera joints had this problem.

My old EF 35-135 USM is still alive and kicking on my wife's Elan 7, so it's a very dependable lens.

KEH sells the EOS 10S for $235 to 275 (I'm surprised!), depending on condition. The EF 35-135 USM goes for about $150 to $175. The limited edition wasn't well received as many found the sliver color fake looking on a light plastic body (there are no other differences). It probably isn't worth much more than a black 10S unless you can find a very "special" buyer (Canon Nut).
