we already use chlorine, but it kills germs not algea. Besides it isn't really that healthy to use normal bleach in a pool. I have heard something about some special hay or straw that you bundle up and attach to the side. what is it? thanks

Barley Straw

Chlorine kills the algae in our pool. We just have one of those floating things with the tablets in it. Never had an algae problem. We used to use bleach and that worked too. Why is bleach not good to use? just wonderin...

I use bleach in the horse tanks, or they'll get that slimy algae growing on the sides. I scrape it off, rinse & refill, and then put a couple glugs of bleach in. Then I taste it to make sure it's not too strong. Has never hurt me or the animals.

Bleach (chlorine) helps by removing the chlorophyl that the algae need to survive. Sunlight will destroy the chlorine so you may have to shock the pool with extra chlorine to kill the algae, then wait a while to use it.

I don't know if this is applicable to your situation but I add non- iodized salt to my tropical fish tanks (freshwater) to help inhibit algae growth.

We always keep the resedue above 3.00 but whenever we top up the water (from a deep-well) it goes completely green. The only way it goes clear with out using alge-side is when we super chlorinate on a really sunny day. does anyone use barley?
