harvested my first pickings out of the garden...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

just have to brag a bit here... picked a nice mess of snap beans just yesterday along with a few strwberries and will be picking zucchini and cherry tomatoes by the weekend! This year was special cause my lil boy was finally big enough to help in the garden... even if it was only to step all over the rows!

Anyway, I'd like to post a few pics of the garden... how does one go about that in this forum?

Thanks... Otter

Congratulations! The first picking is always special. I usually have greens ready first, so I dress them in a bacon dressing! I can hear my arteries hardening from just the thought, but the first of the veggies SHOULD taste special, so I can never resist!

Hi

Boy I just was thinking how good my garden looked now that the last of the snow is finally off it. Just a wee bit muddy but nothing that 4 more weeks of(dare I hope) sun can't dry out. By the first of June I should be able go plant the peas and potatos and carrots. Strawberries should be ready by the end of June. Where are you? I'm up here by the Yukon/Alaska border and we don't even think about planting until the end of May, and then keep our fingers crossed that every full moon after that we don't get frost. Yeah, kinda hard growing things but the place sure does beat most other places to live. Just have to be the hardy sort(cabin fever otherwise)or the dumb one. LOL Enjoy your goodies and when I finally get mine I'll think of you. Take care Anne

Am in the process of getting our garden planted. We are in the central california foothills. Some people plant earlier with the use of cold frames, clouches (sp?) and the like. So far I've waited until the weather wants to cooperate and the garden is dry. This is our second "real" garden. It was always flower bed tomatoes, zuch and cukes before. My strawberries that I planted last year are looking good. Big and bushy with lots of blossoms and green berries. Also our blackberries are starting to blossom. Can't wait to have something to pick !! YUMMY ! So jealous of others that are already harvesting !

Knee high by the fourth of july... Here it was may 4 and my sweet corn was already there. Last year I planted everything too early- March 9th, and wound up with stunted corn, and everything took longer than it should have to get up and producing. This year I lasted until Aril to plant before I got bitten by the bug. Its all in, now.

Hi Cindy Palmer, You're almost a neighbor, we're near Angels Camp, CA. We've been here about 10 years, at 1,000' elevation, on 3 acres, with chickens, 1/4 acre garden and 60+ fruit, nut and olive trees, we planted. Got Store bought electricity about 1 1/2 years ago. Maybe we could share tips... Tried to use your e-mail address, said it was undeliverable... To everyone else, back to the subject, lettuce is commin' up, carrots, radishs, onions, asparagus were lousy this year, almost all the fruit trees, set. Got Fava Beans flowerin'(All good portuguese grow them)potatoes about 1' tall. waitin' till mother's day to plant the tender things outside, old locals' insist on that... pays to listen to the old locals', found out plantin' tomatoes in March and coverin' them, doesn't work, they always stay, stunted. good luck on your new plantin's. lacyj. Cindy, if you want to, try my e-mail, maybe we could exchange info... harmonyhill@caltel.com

I don't blame you for bragging Otter. We had the first asparagus of the year last night. It was wonderful.

i think if you go to the bottom of the page, ms. otter, & open the subject of 'forum' you can hit ctrl f and a search box will come up put in 'post photos chuck' or 'forum photos' or 'photos how too' & mr chuck put a two part instructional in there for us.

i'm cooling the last of my spring lettuce as we speak for a trip into town to the co-op. the spring rains delayed my bean planting this year, so i'm jealous!!!!!!
