trouble with the damper slide for Heartland Oval cookstove

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have a three year old Heartland Oval wood cookstove. Except for the first year, I've had a terrible time with the damper slide (the one at the back of the stove that, when closed, causes the smoke to circulate around the oven. It gets so that I can't close it at all---feels like sooty build-up. The flue is cleaned regularly and rarely has sticky buildup. I scrape the inside of the stove like I'm supposed to and it just has the typical buildup. It is next to impossible to clean this slide, but my husband did manage to do it with a small wire brush and it worked perfectly----for about a month.

Is anyone else having problems like this? It is so much of a job (and so often) that I haven't used the oven damper since November. Help???
