Garden Huckleberries

Has anyone ever grown Garden Huckleberries before? I read that they are great for making pies. This is our first year to grow them and was wondering how well liked they are.

We have wild huckleberries on our farm and they do not make jam or pies at all. We have a wonderful blueberry patch (cousins) for all that stuff but the huckleberries in this part of the country are not worth it. I have heard though, that somepeople have great luck with theres.

I have the most beautifull Huckleberries! I found them for sale this spring and planted a row (6 bushes). This too is my first year. I am looking into what to do with them! I do know one thing, don't pick them too early. Mine started to ripen from the bottom limbs up. the first ones to get real dark tasted nasty, but I left them alone until all the berries where dark. It has taken a long time. At least a month. They are alot better tasting but I'm still going to let them stay on the bushs longer. My Grandma say's the birds will let you know when there ripe :)

Hi there.

We have recently planted a group.. 8 or so Huckleberry bushes in our garden near Nottingham in the UK. They are jsut becoming ripe in what is our Autumn.. fall.. I found this page eagerly looking for recipes using them.. as we have already cropped and used our raspberies and blackcurrants.

Will let you all know how sweet they are once they ripen.

I Planted Huckleberries earlier this year for the first time at my allotment, i must say that my first taste was rather disappointing with a rather tart disgusting flavour. I am however waiting until they are truely ripe, as i too have been told by some old guy that when the birds take an interest, thats the time to harvest. by the way i live Nr Bristol England.
