African Violets : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Someone gave me a couple African violets. I don't know how to care for them. Any suggestions? Thanks

Where your at, it should be easy. You got a east window. with filtered light. they like that. Also water from bottom. Buy some African food liquid, in a little green bottle at wall mart. and put a couple drops in water, each time you water.Always let them dry out between watering. They will rot if over watered. And they like clay pots, put a dish under them to put water in. You should do just fine

Just make sure that they don't get too dry. I keep mine in a north window so they don't get direct sunlight. I have about 15 of them and the ones that do the best are in self watering pots. I have had to start giving them away because they keep multiplying.

Cindy---- I have tons of house plants & in the summer they all go outside---even my violets----

If the stems get long----they aren't getting enough sun----- the advice you have received is good-----

Violts are easy to start from leaves----I have soo much fun starting them----I don't know any one who doesn't like violets----& they are a plant that don't take up a lot of room & need little care--they are great for care homes---So I start several & take as gifts to people in the carehomes----if when I go to visit them--& if their plant isn't doing well--- I offer to bring it home & get it going again--- as a matter of fact I brought one home today------from the care home-- after a visit------I think it didn't get watered enough--so I'll give it some TLC & take it back again----
