Goat pain reliever?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi all, I have a month old kid that just got debudded with a hot iron yesterday. Today he seems to be in more pain than the others. Is there something I can do for him? Such as aspirin and something. Poor little guy just isn't himself. Thanks! Amy

The best way to help with pain and swelling after disbudding is to apply ice to the area. As for pain you can give some banamine.

Who disbudded your kid ?? If he is still acting this way tomorrow I would take him down to the vet's for a check. Possibly he was burned too far down. A month is too old to be dehorning a little buck or does for that fact. Usually within a couple days to a week old is when we do ours. Just when you can begin to feel the little "button" horn with your finger. Check to see if it is infected you can always put an antibiotic on them. Sometimes buck still end up with horns..nature maybe ?? Our older buck has horns (scurs) but they grow and break off themselves...not really like horns. I remember one time we actually used little bands around horns when we bought a doe that had them. It did an "OK" job but burning them is the fastest and best way we have found. Good Luck and let us know what you find out.

you might try some solarcaine or similar product sprayed on it. i do this before and after disbudding and it seems to help. baby aspirin should be safe.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. He seems better today and I gave him some aspirin. Sadly it was the vet who did it and also who suggested we wait longer to disbud. I was ready at a week old. He has little to no experience with goats although he is a great vet in general. By the way, how long do you all hold the disbudder on the area for? For 1 month olds? For 1 week olds? Amy

This is a good website for pain killers and other meds that you can use on goats and it gives the proper dosage.

Pepto Bismal & aspirin are a couple of the human meds that can be used on goats.

Glad to hear the little guy is feeling better.
