Some Sony DVD players plays only CD-RW. Try to burn oposite media to what you used, and check http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php for compatibility of Your DVD player with other media

For 30 seconds perhaps. Then you may want 2 bring back that player to the store to exchange it for a model that will play your burned VCD. U did say it's new, didn't u?

If you live in the US, some Sony models will play VCD burned to CD-RW and the Prime Peripherals brand CD-R discs that Office Max sells in their store. Mehmet's suggestion to return it for another model is actually well worth considering. By the way, Prime Peripherals brand is the ONLY brand of CD-R discs that will work on Sonys that don't support CD-R. Sony does make players that do support CD-R though and if you have one of these (read your owner's manual) you probably goofed up making the VCD.
