Stack Filter

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Hi,

I am using a 24mm F2.8 and 28mm-135mm USM IS lense, will stacking of 2 filters (one HOYA HMC UV(0) and a B+W Circular Polariser) together cause vignetting at wide angle??

Please Advice.

Cheers Confuse

Answers

Probably yes. But if you are using the Polariser there is no need for the UV filter. Why not take it off?

Those UV protection filters come off, you know. And when you put a polarizer on the lens, it's still protected.

Will it vignette? Whether it does or not, believe it will and remove the UV when attaching another filter.

Even if it doesn't vignette you're still degrading optical quality by putting an extra pointless layer of glass between you and your subject by stacking.

hi, my idea of not removing the UV is that dust or dirt maybe settle on the front element. i was thinking of fixing the UV permanantly there. of cos we may clean it, but risk scratching the lens.

There's no reason to be paranoid or obsessive about protecting the lens. I always use protective filters but the front element is not likely to be messed up just by changing filters. Even a little dust, fingerprints, motor oil or sewer sludge will not cause any permanent damage. Just clean it off and keep shooting. I've dropped more lenses than most people will ever own and most times they survive abuse pretty well.
