Looking for a pattern for a turkey/duck diaper!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hello,

Yes, I am looking for a pattern to make a diaper for my turkey. Don't tell me to put it outside, please. I have it in the house and that is where he will stay for now. He has become quite attached to me, and I to him. Eventually, he (or maybe it's a she) will be moved to the barn with the rabbit, llamas and goats. But for now, it's too little to fend for itself, so I need to make a diaper for him. I have seen the bird diaper, but the price is too steep. The pic I have seen is unclear as to exactly how it is made. I would rather just use a pattern, but I guess I could design something. I have seen people using plastic baggies (sandwich bags) but I don't think plastic is a good idea. I know many of you will think I'm crazy, but that's okay, I am. :)

Hi Cindy, We have a lambie in the house, and he wears a diaper. It doesn't do anything for his wizzer, since it doesn't cover that far up on his belly, but it works great for the other stuff. It's just a regular disposable baby diaper, size small. Not sure how it'd work for a turkey, but I bet you could adapt it somehow.

Might look in the book, "Duck! There's A Goose In The House!", http://www.thegoosesmother.com/HTMbooks.htm By Nancy Townsend (aka "The Goose's Mother") as her review states: “A great deal of my book is devoted to communicating, understanding, and getting rid of any preconceived notions about "poultry" being stupid. Of course, you will also learn how to feed and care for them, their history, their social habits in the wild, etc. The only way to properly raise these little creatures is by being very close to them. The pattern and instructions for making the diaper harness are included in the book. This is the same design I raised my own "kids" in - Matilda Duck, Maggie Goose, Mimi Goose, and now Cricket Duck.”

I remember watching a show on PBS this winter that had a lady with a Silkie chicken in diapers. She had fancy red ones! (Diapers, not chickens). You must not be too crazy Cindy,or at least you aren't alone! Best wishes.

Here's a Duck Diaper page, don't forget to treat for lice and mites after you get the turkey out of the house. http://www.geocities.com/petduckassociation/diaper.html Hope this helps. LQ

BC you amaze me as to your vast scope of knowledge! Some one should show this post to stan, bet he would suggest bbq sauce instead of diaper powder.Cindy we dont think you are crazy, most of us have had weird things in our house to[ should have seen when my daughters washed there show goats in the bath tub].My husband swears he is going to write a book called theres a goat in the kitchen, Which is as far as Mocha and Seinna have made it before we have caught them in the house.

Thank you everyone! The websites you guys sent were ones I already found in my "Google" search. They are nice, but the book is $29.00 and the bird diapers are even more. So I stopped at the dollar store and bought some preemie baby diapers. They're small and thin and I thought that I could cut a hole in them for it's tail and put it under its wings. Well, my darling turkey who adores me, at least that's what I thought, proceeded to beat the hell out of me with it's newly formed wings! Then it suddenly occured to me, that this is a barnyard pet, not a household pet, so it will be living with the rabbit in my dog/cat proof stall in the barn. It reminds me of my kids when they turned into teenagers, then wanted to move out and thought that I would be mad!!! LOLOLOL Yeah right, I helped them pack! : ) I didn't mind cleaning up the poop at first (from the turkey, not my teens), but it gets old. And I thought my house dog would be kind enough to eat the turkey droppings, but no, it's just not good enough for him! (I figured if he can eat cat, goat, horse and cockateil poop, why not turkey poop?) So I must push the little one out of it's nest and hang out with him outside.

Thanks again for your help!

By the way, anybody need some diapers???

Cindy

it's a nice testament to this board that all the answers (so far) are helpful ones and do not go where one's imagination naturally takes a feller when asked such a question. I currently have stinky turkeys in my dining room. I can't wait to hustle them outside (another long month in zone 3) but I enjoy knowing that Crazy Cindy sorts are out there. I just hope we end up with a picture or two. Cindy?

My Banty Cochin hen wears a small figure 8 harness. A quart size Ziplock baggie is used for her diaper. It's attached to the harness ring on her back with a large safety pin and the same way underneath on her belly to the harness. Ducks wear the gallon size baggie. Don't know about the turkey....either the gallon size or the 2 gallon size.

ARE YOU PEOPLE INSANE? You are talking about livestock wearing diapers!

-- Harmony (harmonyfarm57@hotmail.com), April 27, 2002.

No, we are not insane. (crazy? yes!, Insane, no!)We are having a good time in life and the animals are certainly not being abused. Come over and sit a spell with me and my turkey (who is still in the house and is NOT wearing a diaper because he doesn't want to, and I respect that.). If you don't like what you see, then put me in the insane asylum because I already live in a crazy house!

Thank you all for your wonderful ideas.

I just love this thread! I have diapered quite a few things in my time. Never a turkey. How does that diaper work on a chicken? Does the egg catch in the sack. Meals on wheels kinda like? Or would that be brown bagging it on the eggs? Ha! Thanks for the giggle ya'll! Loved it!

Forgot to add that I don't think that Cindy is insane. She is crack me up funny, but not wacko! If she is, then we all are! I have had turkeys, chickens, rabbits, calves, dogs, and cats of course and lots more in the house for doctoring or other stuff. If she wants a turkey in her house, it is her house! Diapered or not! :~) !!! Oh and whoever said that about the harness thing. Would it work for a dog in heat that has to wear a diaper? It sure is a pain to keep one on our tiny pomeranian. She does look especially cute in her skivvies though! Ha!
