Abusive/threatening e-mails

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I have had an e-mail today informing me that there has been 22 complaints against my IP number.

I have returned the e-mail with a list of addresses(all from this site)who have sent obscene, abusive and threatening messages to my personal account(philkneen@manx.net)

As I said about 5 weeks ago,I no longer use this site,I am however still in contact with some of the regular users.May I please remind the less informed users that obscene e-mailing is a crime, both here in the UK as well as the rest of the world.

I will not be entering into any further correspondence on this matter.

Phil/Phill spelled differently smells the same...please go away, TT Racer.

i never wrote you, but how can you be surprised? you want to stir up the pot of geriatrics to pass the time, but can't take your own meds?

bye bye mosquito

-- Steve (leitz_not_leica@hotmail.com), April 25, 2002.

Isn't is possible that someone from Phill's company is doing this, as his group seems to use a proxy server? I, too, am annoyed at the mosquito, but the earlier posts from Phill, which were often rather blunt & offhand, never approached the level of recent posts--and the first guy did seem interested in photography . . .

-- Preston Merchant (merchant@speakeasy.org), April 25, 2002.

I'm interested in photography! I have a whole drawer full of 'adult' photography. The judge called it hardcore porn, but he old and didn't know any better.Didn't stop him from locking me up for 3 months,I did however get to meet Gary Glitter.Nice.

What's all this about TT races then?

-- Phil the jape (philkneen@manx.net), April 25, 2002.

a google search of both phils turned up the same people, and islandlighthouse is just an email address and not an photo agency for hector to contact to hire phil (old post, google turns it up). he started out nice, then people started to flame him and he snapped. perhaps something at home provoked the recent bs.

phil is a 32 year old heating engineer, biker, leica user M6ttl, 35 lux. sf20 flash, who knows whats true. and an independent distributor of various racing gear and other stuff.

After contacting Manxnet myself I found there are phone numbers for four Phil/Phill Kneen's on the Isle of Mann. I've sent a request to find out which phone number matches the IP number. If I find it I'll post it, maybe if we inundate his phone with calls he'll leave. Phil/Phill - the excuse that others are using your Ip doesn't wash. If your not using it, call your provider and have it cancelled. It's that easy.

-- Bob Todrick (bobtodrick@yahoo.com), April 25, 2002.

Bob:

If I find it I'll post it, maybe if we inundate his phone with calls he'll leave.

I wouldn't suggest that. Just helpful advice. You might end up in court. In the EU, where it would be tried, you might end up in jail. Not taking a side here or giving you legal advice; just suggesting. Two recent cases in the EU have confirmed the legality of web postings. Trying to help.

Bob:

By-the-by, you and Tony think that IP addresses mean something. In most cases they do. Still for those people who know how to work the system, it is easy to proxy. Since many of the people here aren't "software savy", you could probably use their IP addresses. You can certainly use servers in most places. I don't do this but I have had to trace and correct many such cases. Normal IP searches won't help.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the advice Art. What would the legalities be (as you know it) if I find the phone #, post on the forum that I have it, and anyone who wants it can e-mail me directly for it?

-- Bob Todrick (bobtodrick@yahoo.com), April 25, 2002.

Bob:

I am in no position to offer legal advice on the web; particularly about the EU.

As I see it, you have recommended phone harassment of a person in a post. The post has legal standing in the EU; I am told.

Unless you want to consult a legal consultant in the EU, I think that it would be in your best interest to drop the subject. Just an opinion.

Isn't it evident how futile all this is? Phil, whoever he really is - and who on earth cares - can/will continue to harass this site even if his dial up changes. Getting into phone conversation with the guy isn't going to serve any purpose.

There was once a Phill Kneen, it seems, who said he worked for an agency called Lighthouse. It seems some people phoned up the said agency and verified that he really did exist. He was not a TT racer. His relationship with the present Phil/Phill is completely unverifiable.

Just drop it and hope that he'll eventually get bored. If it's the same Phill/Phil who wrote me about his agency and all, I just wish he'd stop giving everyone a hard time. This used to be a good place to hang out.

these incidents are endemic to the internet. in every instance, where the members of a forum ignore a bounder, he eventually goes away (or in some cases actually reforms). ignore this guy's posts, and he will disappear. i now it sounds simplistic, childishly so, but it really works. any form of retaliation -- indeed attention of ANY kind -- will prolong the agony.

FWIW, you can lookup IP address info, including the server admin's contact address and phone number, at:

"If I find it I'll post it, maybe if we inundate his phone with calls he'll leave"

ooops, now you have really screwed up.I have sent a copy of that to Manx.net.Oh dear,oh dear........

-- Phil the front (philkneen@manx.net), April 25, 2002.

Hi, everybody:

What if we just follow Roger's wise advise?. Easy to do and far more likely to work (IMHO) than any other technical/legal approach, specially considering that we could well be in front of a dubious mental health case which would make hardly advantageous to get involved in his/her (?) game for any longer.

Just a suggestion

Regards

-Iván

The original Phill (with two l's) appeared here, back in the late Pliestocene, with some basically good natured, slightly beery jibes, calculated to provoke but not offend. It was the sort of pub humor you'll encounter anywhere celts gather and have a few. Then some mean-spirited lurker saw an opportunity and jumped in. No cheery raillery down at the local from this one, who sounded more like a bright but bitter teenager getting back at his parents. It's a flaw in the net that it takes some really sophisticated computer skills to distinguish the two. And by now there may be others who have joined the game There's really no point in trying to shoot back, since there's at least a 50-50 chance you'll hit the wrong person.

-- david kelly (dmkedit@aol.com), April 25, 2002.

that is pretty cool. i always knew aussies were cool people.

abuse can be reported to abuse@manx.net

-- Steve (leitz_not_leica@hotmail.com), April 25, 2002.

He is a child or a coward. Let's all ignore him for it is attention he seeks.

-- Erik (supercalifragilisticpolymathicgenius@hotmail.com), April 25, 2002.

Yes,that's very true, you can report it,however I can also report all the people that have sent me VERY abusive e-mails and made absive comments about me........where will it end?

I'll walk out of my house to find that Mr Bush has launched a full- scale nuclear attack on the Isle of Man(and 'accidentally' shot some innocent Canadian troops in the process).I will have the para's and the SAS searching for me in my secret bunker......I'll be no.1 most wanted.

This is how it all starts.......

-- Phil Bin Ladin (philkneen@manx.net), April 25, 2002.

01624 842862(You'll need to find the code for the Isle of Man).

Give it a ring....what do you have to loose.I bet I don't get one single call from any of you biscuit-arses.

-- Phil in waiting (philkneen@manx.net), April 25, 2002.

Remember when Phill was casting about for a domestic partner exchange, under the guise of a PJ project?

Maybe that transaction soured, and someone is out to slander his good name . . .

-- Preston Merchant (merchant@speakeasy.org), April 25, 2002.

Hey Phil(l), maybe you need to get off the dreary little island and get a life beside being and child-like Internet nuisance? Seriously, or get some counseling, this is pathetic.

-- Dan Brown (brpatent@swbell.net), April 25, 2002.

Do you have a 'comments that may get rid of trolls' book?

You must be getting close to the final pages by now?

-- Phil Ayshio (philkneen@manx.net), April 25, 2002.

Hi again Phil(l). I just had a nice conversation with your man, Andy. Nice chap, and he had nothing bad to say about you. I gave him my number, why don't you give me a call tomorrow during the normal work day in the states. I think we could have a good conversation.

Cheers!

-- dan Brown (brpatent@swbell.net), April 25, 2002.

Well,I think Dan must have imagined that phone call.......come on,you can do better than this!

-- Phil the Imposter (philkneen@manx.net), April 25, 2002.

No I didn't! Andy answered the call "Phil(l)'s phone" and he knew your last name, pronounce with a silent 'k'. He said you were his boss, and thought you were out on some news assignment. But I think you might have been there and merely declined the call.

Hey, let's talk, I would enjoy the exchange, and I'd be kind as well.

I'm at that number of another 20 minutes.

-- Dan Brown (brpatent@swbell.net), April 25, 2002.

Tic, tic, tic ...

-- Dan Brown (brpatent@swbell.net), April 25, 2002.

I have a feeling we have a Phil Kneen impostor.

Phil Kneen, going by Google, is (as noted above) a heating engineer, who runs an independent business selling energy saving solutions, assorted industrial plumbing, motorcylcle parts etc on the Isle of Man. He is also a championship motorcycle racer, having won the Grand Prix there and other championships. So he is something of a local hero. According to the motorcycle page on Google (picture provided) he is married, and has two small girls.

Judging by his many earlier posts on photo.net, he is a keen photographer and has made several well balanced, useful posts there.

Hardly the picture of an internet loser with time on his hands to make wierd, antisocial posts, wouldn't say?

-- Ms Commerce (mscommerce@hotmail.com), April 25, 2002.

Well, someone's hi-jacked his likeness for kicks. Too bad for Phill Kneen. The imposter is really boring, coming up with these gay "Phil the *blank*" postings, along with misc. kindergarten comments. Someone's a big asssss losah!

-- Vince (yoohoo@yoohoo.com), April 25, 2002.
