EARTHQUAKE!!!!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

5.5 on the richter scale shook us up just a bit early yesterday morning. So far no damage noticed exept that our landlord's shed has some cracks in it now. The funny part was that the earthquake began at the exact instant that the washer went into an unbalanced spin and stopped at the exact moment that I turned the washer off!! We wondered at the strength of the washer, never dreaming it was an earthquake, until we heard the news later!

I read about it in this mornings paper. Sounds like it did a bit of damage to the roads up there. I am glad you are all OK.

With the epicenter being somewhere in Quebec, we caught just the outer limits of it. The whole house shook, but we could not see any major damage in our area. Not having a TV, and not having the paper delivered, I have not seen any pictures.

I got such a kick out of the reporting of that earthquake..it made me laugh..when asked if it were common in NY to have a 5.1 quake, the person from the Government said," Sure..it's not rare..we had one in 1983." Gee, that was 19 years ago fella...I guess he thought that was just a few years ago, so he must be my age LOL.......Glad no one was injured...

Yup....sure was fun! ;-) I looked it up...... between Plattsburgh, New York, and Worcester, Vermont, as the crow flies: 50 miles (80 km) ( 43 nautical miles)

I ran to my glass jars, Peter to his new, tall chimney and Heather to her house. Everything was OK.....but it was eye-opening. The rumbling was very deep and it lasted a long time. The drums of water in the greenhouse continued to sway for maybe 5 minutes.

The underground house creaked and groaned and ground in some pretty amazing ways. The greenhouse seemed to take the brunt of it because it is the only part of the house mostly out of the earth. Heather was afraid the greenhouse was going to break. I wondered if I should stay put or run. Our house is way overbuilt with logs, so it seemed safer in here.

The dog freaked out when the quake started. He ran around between all of us, making sure we were all OK. The house has been re-settling after the quake and he glares everytime the house makes noises. We did have one good-sized after shock.

We have a horizontal axis washing machine in the greenhouse. When it starts spinning, it sounds like a jet taking off. Today it keeps sounding like a quake. To top it off, it seems to be another gatling gun weekend in Jericho, VT. Those suckers ALWAYS sound and feel like an earthquake. Poor Zeke dog is at witt's end......not too hard ;-)

Our 1983 quake was a 5.2 and this one a 5.1. They felt VERY different to me. This one felt really deep.

I was camping near Temecula, CA for the Northridge earthquake. Heather was sleeping in the truck and I was in a tent, on the ground. Heather slept through it! I felt like the earth was undulating in waves. Little mud slides happened and the forest service concrete outhouses cracked. Here's something about the difference in feeling.....

Hey Cathy, that is so funny about your washer timing! Next time, save electricity and let the earthquake shake your machine to wash. :) Glad you're all ok.

-- Jenn (none@none.com), April 21, 2002.

funny, the first time I felt a quake out here(not far from Temecula), I thought it was the washer too. Took me a while to immediately recognize a quake, my first thoughts were usually something else. We've had a few 5 magnitude the 2 years I've been here and lots of little shakers.

Patty, I do not know if there were two quakes or not; I had heard that it was Quebec and have not had a chance to check the papers yet. I guess I could turn on the radio, but I've been sick in bed most of today, and we were out most of yesterday.

I just had to say - I was born and raised in Plattsburgh! Wend, I didn't know you were so close. I'll have to come visit next time I'm up that way.
