garden supprise. : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I was out mowing the back yard last night for the first time this year. Boy, I wish I had a mini bailer, that grass was high.

The garden is located in the back yard and generally is left neglected after the last vegies comes out in fall until we get ready to plant again. I noticed a number of weeds and grass had covered the garden and at one end was a few nice looking stems. Seems some of the scallions from last year didnt grow but have this year. A very nice couple of rows of great tasting scallions will be on the table this weekend.

A little negligence is a good thing!! I almost always get some radishes or lettuce where the old stuff goes to seed...

My mother said that when she and Daddy first moved to the farm, she mentioned planting okra, and my uncle (Daddy's youngest brother, who was about 18 at the time) asked what she was talking about, you don't plant okra, it just comes up! My grandma always left hers to go to seed, and it just came up volunteer, so she never planted it - Alton didn't know it wasn't just spontaneous!
