goat with utter but not bred no male around

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

I have a goat that is 2 years old and developed a utter with milk. I did not notice this at first but after I noticed it she had a bloody discharge down her leg and than I noticed it. I relieved her utter and cleaned her up. I have never herd of this. I would like to dry her up and clear up the bloody milk in her utter.

Please leave me a message if you are familar with this.

thank you Marilyn

The udder developement in a 2 year old is actually quite normal in good milkers. Called a percocious milker, we have had LaMancha kids with milk in their udders at 3 months old. You can actually milk them. Your doe sounds like she injured her udder. If it is long and pendulous perhaps she stepped on the half? A two hear old whether bred or not would have the normal hormone induced enlargement of her udder, just because she is older. But the blood is totally not normal. Is her udder hot? Can you see any bruise or tenderness at all? If she injured her udder the blood is coming from the inside broken capilaries. Do you have other goats that perhaps butted her? I would not stop milking her until you have this matter fixed, keep a check on her temperature, and make sure she doesn't come down with mastitis due to this injury. Once the milk clears of blood, then stop milking her. Vicki

Vicki, would you recommend a "dry cow" treatment when the doe is dried off due to the injury?
