Has anyone ever used CL vaccination labeled for sheep on goats. If so did it work.

I have been doing research on the very same subject. Look at the link on here. Basically from what I have read here and elsewhere is that the CL vaccine has some significant protection for sheep, not 100 % and little protection for goats. And there does seem to be some serious complications with the goats with the vaccine at the injection sites. You can just get your goats blood tested for CL and go from there as far as isolation, culling etc. Vicky would be the one to give you a more thorough answer than me though. Yup. Everything I've read says don't do it. Being mostly a newbie to goats I got talked into a CL vial for vaccinations. Don't plan on using it after I researched it again. So I guess I've wasted $17 and the place I bought it from benefitted... rats...

Over on the boer goat forums at groups.yahoo.com folks rave about it. Though not cleared for goats, they use it in animals that are negative for blood test, it does no good to vaccinate a positive doe. The problem comes from the fact that from that second on when you vaccinate the animal will then always test positive for CL. So if you have a goat for sale LB, and I say sure I will buy it send a blood test in for CL and CAE and I will be up to pay for the goat. Think I or anybody else is really going to buy a goat from you who tests positive for either of these diseases on your word only that the only reason she is positive is because you vaccinate? Nope! So bottom line for me is, no I won't use it, CL is easily gotten rid of through quaranteen and culling, a valuable animal is quaranteened for live, a less valuable animal is culled. Vicki

This was one of the discussions I had with a few friends last Saturday night doing a DHIR test at my friend's dairy. We discussed the vaccine, it was mentioned that there are 2 kinds, the one that is hmmmm generic, or all purpose sold and the one developed specifically for your herd. The question raised was when given the generic one sold the goat still will develop a lump, so is this lump contagious or not? I figured it probably might not be since it was a dead strain, but CL gives me the shivers anyways. and if the goat developed a lump, I'm thinking that some type of mark would exist anyways, maybe not. I guess its time I read up on this a little more.

And as mentioned, when you sell goats and/or do testing they will test positive, and how can you prove it was the vaccine? You would be taking a risk there if your goals are down the road to sell stock. The decision would have to be made considering what your goals are, and you may think that you might not ever sell stock, then in a few yrs something change and if they test positive you are out of luck. Most folks I know of who have done this ahve closed herds anyways.
