forensics ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Does anyone know where I might find an answer to this? We were having a discussion on genetics. The domesticated Canine versus the Wolf(Canis lupus)and whether forensic labs could tell the difference in any blood traces left by either species. We are told and it is generally accepted that the domestic dog was bred from the wolf so just how close are they and can modern labs differenciate between them with just a blood sample? Any "Quincy's" out there? LOL Thanks, LQ

My guess it yes they can tell the difference. I'll ask my DNR biologist friends today and post later. You might get a better answer by then.

"There is not presently a valid test that will guarantee analysis of whether a particular canine carries wolf blood. Certain DNA studies have been conducted by a New York laboratory under contract by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, but a much larger population study of wolf and dog breeds would have to be done before conclusive results can be obtained."
