trying to find blood meal and feather meal in eastern washington state

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I found a place in California that has blood meal and feather meal for about $15 for a 50 pound sack. Of course, the shipping would end up being about $10 per sack and I'm looking to get about a ton (40 sacks). If I can find something closer, I could save myself about $400 in shipping costs.

It seems that this forum is just riddled with organic growers near me, so I'm hoping that somebody here will have an answer.

Anybody have a source on blood meal or feather meal in eastern washington or northern idaho?

Paul,

I live in Western WA and our local Cenex carries it. I can't remember the price but surely your local farm co-op can get a better deal on it for you.

Also, are you going for the certification and what crops are you going to be growing? I am looking to buy from Washington farmers for our Produce Delivery Service and CSA. Let me know if you have stuff to sell. Amy

I buy our at the local farm co-op store. I think if you ask at any big garden center, they will have it, maybe just not on display.

I buy ours at the local (80 miles away) farm co-op store. I think if you ask at any big garden center, they will have it, maybe just not on display.

Hey Paul, I called a friend of mine that works at the Organic Supplier in Wenatchee (for the orchardists) and she says that their wholesaler in Spokane could probably get you in touch with a retailer over in that area. The name of the wholesale business is Cascade Seed and the phone number is 1-800-289-4352. She says that the business in Wenatchee no longer carries the blood meal because the owner has concerns about something to do with bacteria. You might ask Cascade about that. She told me that feather meal is used to increase the nitrogen and that there are other alternatives if you can't find it. Hey, were you the one that had the pictures of the golf cart with the bed on the back for hauling stuff recently on the forum? My DH just brought home one that someone had given him and I am planning on showing him your pictures! Neat! Good luck with the garden stuff. Marie

Amy, my cenex doesn't carry anything like it. I am looking into organic certification. Ask me again in a couple of months.

Laura, I've noticed that most garden centers carry it, but usually small boxes, so the price ends up higher. Do you have experience with them also selling bulk, or 50 pound sacks?

Marie, thanks for the info, I'll call in the morning. Yes, I have a little, green, electric golf cart with a utility box in the back. And a web page with a pic. Is yours electric? The quietness of it sure makes a big difference.

Paul, No it is not electric, will the neighbors complain?? LOL! Why would that make a difference, just for the sake of our own sanity or are they really that loud? I don't remember going by a golf course and hearing noise like the Indy 500. My DH says they come with mufflers. Wish us luck!! What is the website again, if I might ask? It will save my going downstairs in the archives and digging around for it. What will you be growing organically? Veggies?

When I drive the electic golf cart around, I can hear the birds, insects, wind, water, etc. I've driven the gas powered stuff, and it's just loud enough so miss out on a lot of that sort of thing.

My page is at www.javaranch.com/farm

What am I growing? That's a big question. Right now I'm focusing on the pasture. Hay and grazing. But we have a few acres we are working for green manures and we're building our raised beds out of rock. We've planted some trees. We need to get a feel for what does well on this land.
