I have used several encoders to convert avi files to mpeg1. After doing so and I play the movie, only the sound is present, no video. Any suggestions on why no video?

There are guides at www.vcdhelp.com on using various encoders. Take a look and see if you are leaving out a step when you encode.

I had the same problem but then i put in a disk that was a vcd and played it for about 10 sec. Then i put in the movie and there was then sound and video and ive been doing this for about 1 year.
