Heads Up if you have a tripod website, going to pay for after 20k's

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Just got an e-mail from tripod where our website see below that they will charge for website space if over 20 MB after April 30th. Before I mention my concerns about this for the future of a pay for internet, can someone tell me how many K's are in MB?

This seems to be a growing trend with many website hosts such as Homestead, and, shoot, forgot some of the others, was on the tip of my fingers. anyways, seems that if this happens and more and more a precident will happen and others will follow. The internet is the biggest source of communication in the world now and millions use it, going to pay would certainly hang them if folks can't sfford 9.00 a month here, 20.00 there and then if yahoo goes for pay for its lists.

if folks can't afford it for each individual site, etc then they will be shooting themselves in the foot. And, I thought that we paid a monthly fee with our iSP's for this. Oh well, if no one can afford it then its their loss.

Sure is getting greedy like yahoo. I read someplace either in a newspaper or magazine that folks who started out with them from day one became very wealthy a few yrs later.

As I have posted before, people have finally figured out that they can't make money adveritsing on banners on web sites. The internet has been and will continue to be the infro highway of the future but if we use it we will have to get ready to pay. Just as this forum is going to be dropped by Countryside because they realize its a lot of trouble and is not makeing a profit for them its the same with several others I have looked at in the past. Most are gone. Lusnet has said they are going to let the system just die. They are not going to spend money to keep it going. The internet is going to change and we will not like a lot of the changes.

Well, I'll be fine as long as they charge a flat fee for as many or all internet sites, searches, lists etc. otherwise I'd get the internet DT's. hmmmmm do i see a scandle with the psychologists to make money counseling internet DT's? or "inter-non"

There are 1024 kb in 1mb, so 20mb is 20,480kb. That's still quite a bit of space, enough for the average personal website.

Many don't realize it but most internet service providers give you free ftp and website space with your account. You can also use multiple hosts to spread your storage out. For example you could have several Tripod, Geocities or other free accounts, one to host a website, one to store the pictures for that site, and on and on. That'd be one way to avoid extra costs.

You can't really blame them for tightening the reins on the free stuff. Somebody has to pay for it. Your isp account mainly is just for internet access, the content itself costs alot of money to produce and maintain.

if you need more than what they have for free ,then buy it or move out "there is no such thing as a free lunch" some one has to pay for the space you site takes up on the server, why not you?

Dearest Paul,

True, business is business. I really don't have any issues with moving our business website because we already have a dot come we are working on. My point is, and it was mentioned in a earlier post above, the new era of a pay for internet is coming fast to fruition and that will impact many. I was not bemoaning "Oh poor me, I have to pay now!" I may have inferred that, but it was not my point here. The impact of a pay for internet will definately effect internet commerce which is growing by leaps and bounds since it is readily available and easy.

"There are 1024 kb in 1mb, so 20mb is 20,480kb"

Is this some sort of new math? K means kilo (1,000) Meg is 1,000,000 or 100 K. Nothin' else.

In some cases you're correct. In data transfer, bits/bytes are based on the metric system where 1 byte=1 bit so yes 1mb would equal 1,000,000 bit/bytes.

It's different thought when you're talking about data storage. In that case 1 byte = 8 bits and 1kilobyte = 1024 bytes. 1mb=1024kb. So in regards to data storage, 20mb = 20,480kb.

You can use this converter to see how it works out. This is a nice all purpose measurement converter;

Hi all! Bernice, unless you have MANY large picture files or MASSIVE html content, 20 meg of space should last you a long time! If you've checked out my site ( http://cstylehomestead.tripod.com/ which is getting more graphical intensive every day) you'll see there's quiet a bit there, and I've not even used 2 meg yet. Of course, if you put streaming video and sound and all the other bells and whistles that are available today on your site, it could eat up the space pretty quick. As for upgrading on Tripod (ie. the message you got), that removes the banner ads and ADDS 25 meg of space to the 20 meg of space you already have for free. Once again ... unless you have a really intense website, what you have should serve you a long time if you can live with the banner ads at the top of each page. Hope this helps some.
