Scratched focusing screen

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I accidentally scratched both sides of the focusing screen on my Rebel 2000/ EOS 300 (don't ask how- I was just too stupid to have tried cleaning it myself). Will any damage to the focusing screen affect the autofocus and/or metering systems? Or is this just a cosmetic problem that I will need to get used to when I look through the viewfinder? Any idea how much a new screen will cost from the Canon service center (U.S. $)?

Thanks for any advice.

The damage is annoying, but cosmetic. Look around on various websites: e-bay, B&H, etc. I paid $40 for a new one for an EOS 3.

You could just phone a Canon service centre and ask. Note, however, that the focus screen on the Rebel 2000/EOS 300 is not user-replaceable like the focus screen on pro cameras like the EOS 3. I don't know what tools are needed to replace it, nor how difficult it would be.
