TTL Prism availability?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Pentax 67 SLR : One Thread

I was planning a trip and had hoped to deliver an original P6x7 ttl prism to a friend in Chile (equipment is VERY expensive there, and IVA a killer on any mail order purchase). I just finished surfing the camera dealer sites and, amazingly, came up empty. Adorama doesnt even list the prism for the original 6x7; B&H has it listed as unavailable or backordered; nothing came up on the Cambridge search; Camera World doesn't stock it, and it is special order item; and I didn't see it on the Delta site. Am I missing the obvious? It this accessory backordered everywhere, or currently -and one would assume, temporarily- out of production? They are all-but impossible to find used (unless you buy the seller's camera and lenses, too). Anyone hear anything about the metered prism? The P67II prism is for sale everywhere, but not the original prism.

I just saw a TTL for the P67 model(right before the 67II) in Ebay. It is new but I believe Pentax stopped production of the older TTL in favor of the new AE prism for the 67II.

I did see a new one at B&H for $400+ so that is an option if you like their prices.

I guess I will go the auction route. Unless I am missing something, isn't this an INCREDIBLY odd thing for Pentax to do? I dont own the p67ii, but was led to believe the old ttl wont work on it, and the new ae prism wont work on the older 6x7 & 67. If that is so, then what support is there for the older units? Just a wild guess but I would have to think there are 100's & 100's x as many older 67's as there are newer 67's (and many distributors and stores are still well stocked with the last 67 - though not necessarily the ttl). Off to ebay...

I too thought this crazy, but I was just in Chicago and the sales guy told me basically what Steve said above (and the sales guy is an aerial shooter using the P6x7, and he seemed to know what he was talking about). I needed one for a freind's camera. Luckily, I came across a store demo at a good price, or it seemed good to me anyway ($279). I believe there are two sellers on photo.net with packages of p6x7 stuff; if they doesn't have a bidder for it all by mid-month, which is now, they will part it out. It might be worth asking if you havent already found soemthing. Also, I believe Midwest Camera has quite a few of these, is conditions ranging from 8+ to 10-.

I just realized I refered to the store as "Midwest Camera". This is incorrect. I was thinking of the repair place. The name of the outfit is "Midwest Photo Exchange"; they have a decent wesbite for used gear, if anyone is interested. Sometimes they seem a little high on price for a used store, but they have good turnaround on Pentax 6x7 stuff: http://www.mpex.com/index.html
