Country car syndrome

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Yesterday, I went into town to get groceries and when I got up to about 45-50 mph my steering wheel really started vibrating. Now, I just had my ignition switch replaced so I'm thinking something else wrong with the car. I made it to town driving slowly and came back home and told my husband about it. Concerned, he went out to look at it. Then he started laughing-while driving through the swamp we call a driveway, a lot of mud had gotten thrown back up under the car and during the week it sat in the driveway-waiting for the ignition switch to come in, the clay mud had really hardened up on the axles. A few knocks with a stout stick and a little washing and the car was good as new. The mud was actually heavy enough to throw the car out of alignment which was causing the vibration!

We lived on a mud road about 2 miles in from the pavement. Sometimes I didn't leave our place for 2 or 3 months at a time, but many of my neighbors went thru vehicle after vehicle driving to town so much. I learned quickly that I needed a good pantry. Also, if I started a project and needed a particular item to finish I learned to put that job on hold until I made my monthly shopping run. Once I was stuck in the mud and needed to go out for an appointment that I couldn't cancel and my neighbor towed my vehicle for the 2 miles to the main road! That was a trip LOL. You should have seen my car afterwards! When we get our new place we will hopefully be on a gravel road, what luxury!
