Having problems loading film for Rebel 2000! and What's this button??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Okay, well I got a Canon Rebel 2000 about 4 months ago. It worked wonderfully for the first roll of film I shot. But then when I tried loading the 2nd one, my camera rewound the film, or put the leader back into the cannister rather than advancing it onto the take-up spool, so I could't load that film. The next two rolls of film I loaded also worked wonderfully. But I tried another roll after that and it rewound rather than advancing again. And now I cannot get the film to load. I have tried numerous times. Today I noticed that one of the little metal springy things inside the back of the camera were you load the film cannister into is bent out of shape. I tried straightening it, but it didn't really do anything. But I don't think that that is really causing any problems. I also noticed today that there is a tiny button on the left side of the camera below the thing you open that back with. I do not know what this button does, but I'm starting to think that it is my problem. I studied the picture next to it, and it makes perfect sense. It looks somewhat like 0_<<< that. the 0 being the film cannister, the _ being the film and the arrows being, well arrows. I was thinking that maybe this button had been stuck down or something causing my camera to rewind the film instead of advancing it. If anyone knows what this button does or what my problem is please tell me.

Where to start. Yes, the little button below the latch is for rewinding film. If you want to wind the roll (so you can open the camera) before you finish shooting the roll, you push that little button with your fingernail and the film will rewind. Could it be stuck? Perhaps, though that is unlikely. (The button should be recessed just slightly below the surrounding surface.)

I don't know why your film is rewinding; it's the kind of thing that is better judged in person, so you might go to almost any camera store and see what they say (loading and unloading problems are frequent occasions for visitors even to one-hour photo places).

Finally, I'm not going to open my Rebel right now, but I'd strongly caution against trying to bend ANY interior metal parts, many of which affect fairly important things like film flatness and tension. Some parts "look bent" when they're actually fine, and there's no reason they would bend unless you had loaded a film canister in there completely wrongly or you seriously snagged the metal piece with something. Again, a camera store should have a look at this also.

Sorry I can't help more but it's hard to judge without seeing it.

i don't think its because of pressing the mid-roll rewind button. because on my EOS 300 i tried to do a mid-roll rewind and i really had to struggle a bit to get that thing pressed. i mean you just can't accidentally press that button so often. the main cause should be something else. since you camera is just 4 months old, you can go you your dealer and tell him your problem. 4 months is a long period for getting your camera replaced, but since its within the warranty period, you should be able to get it repaired free of cost. i wonder such a repair (even by canon) will fix the problem permanantly, since some has faced problems even after repairing their equipments by canon (but rarely). so you should try to play around with your camera when its fixed and try to reproduce the problem. if its not reproducing its probably fixed permanantly (atleast for a long time).
