ANYONE NEAR LEBANON MISSOURI

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I used to get Countryside at my local Walden's Bookstore but they stopped carrying it there so I signed up for a subscription yesterday and found this BBS. It sure is great and chuck a block full of info. I work for the University of Illinois in Champaign, but 4 years ago we bought 12 acres down near Lebanon, Missouri from Ozarkland.com and have been slowly building a house down there. Hope to be able to move down there permanently in a year or so. There was electricity on our land when we bought it and the remains of a log frame for a pole barn that had been stripped of all its tin. We planted some vines over that frame for a nice garden arbor and bought a nice wooden 8 x 12 garden shed so we could store our camping gear and sleep indoors in bad weather. Not soon after we added a 12 x 20 pole shed across the end of that garden shed and closed it in and it is now our kitchen. Last year we added on 3 more rooms which we are hoping to finish up this year. That gives us about 848 sq ft. which is a palace compared to life in the original garden shed. We heat with wood and we have electricity in the house but no well yet and we are using the outhouse we inherited from the previous owner. We have great neighbors who have been good about sharing water when we are down there working and we find we can make do with about 15 gals a day if we are careful (and not too clean hehehehehe). But we love the place and have done most of the building on our own except for our neighbor and his son who helped us do the new metal roof. Wish we could spend more time there, but its a 6 hour drive from champaign to lebanon, but summer is coming. If you would like to see some pictures and read the building diary go to http://www.geocities.com/stevesfarm/MISSOURIJOURNAL1.html Its an ungoing website and not quite up to date....but check it out. Also I am a bit of an amateur architect and love to design small houses, so if anyone would like some help with design work, please feel free to ask. You can see one of my designs at http://www.geocities.com/theatrerb/BLOCKLEAN2S.bmp . Anyone down near Lebanon, give us a holler sometime.

I just bought 1.25 acres from Ozarkland a couple of weeks ago. In Arkansas by Bull Shoals lake. It will be a year or two before I'm ready to build but I can't wait. I have a degree in Const Tech and I already have been sketching out diiferent ideas. Check out bigfootsystems.com They sell a one piece pour pier system (to use with sonotubes) I'm thinking using.

Welcome to Missouri. I live about 45 miles south in Norwood, Mo which is on Hwy 60 east of Springfield or south of Lebanon on 5 hwy. Hope you get your dream and move down here soon.

Lebanon is the home of Cackle Hatchery. If you get settled and want to raise some nice chicken-birds you can get them from the Hatchery and not have to have them stressed from the mail ! Lucky you. I got some lovely Dominiques, Amerucanas and one Cochin that they threw in for free. They have a website if you want to check it out while you're dreaming about your new digs. Good luck.
