Do you mean story outline, or where he got it from, or what?

If you mean story outline, well, read a blurb, or better still the play. If you mean where he got it from, the answer is Saxo Grammaticus' DANISH HISTORY, and also Francois de Belleforest's French adaption of Saxo, HISTOIRES TRAGIQUES, of 1570. They may also have been an earlier English play on the subhject, which is now termed the UR-HAMLET (just means the original HAMLET - in English anyway).

Saxo seems to have got hold of the story from the old Norse/Icelandic sagas.

The UR-HAMLET no longer exists, and it's not even known who wrote it. I haven't found Belleforest yet. You can find the relevant bit of Saxo at www.pitt.edu/~dash/amleth.html

If you mean something completely different, let us know.

Hello, I've found Belleforest now: it's at www.netcomuk.co.uk/~iandel/bellefor.html

Mostly, a prototype for WS's Act III.
