Proper lens hood for (new) FD 35-70 f3.5 - 4.5???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon FD : One Thread

I just got a used FD 35-70mm f3.5 - 4.5 zoom, the more recent, more compact model, serial 1329651. At least, I think it's the more recent model. It has a filter size of 52mm. I did some looking on the net and read that it takes the lens hood: BW-58C (this is according to "lens Work", a book put out by Canon quite a while ago). I've used other FD lenses, and the number in the name of the hood (i.e., BS-52) always designates the filter size of the lens. Is this indeed the right hood for it? A 52mm filter size, but hood BW-58C? Or does anyone know of another model hood that is made for it?

Barry,

Usually Canon lens hood models correspond with filter size but the 35-70 zooms are an exception. The hood mounts to the focus ring on this lens, rather than the filter ring as on most other lenses. The diameter of the focus ring being much larger, Canon opted to size the hood mount to match that of their larger lenses that accept 58mm filters. FD series hoods are labeled B (bayonet mount), W (wide angle), 58 (filter size "usually"). The A,B,C, suffix usually equates to the focal length it's meant for. BS denotes standard (50mm), BT denotes telephoto.

Bill is dead-on. Good answer. I'm looking at my New FD 35-70/3.5- 4.5 now and wondering why I never caught the wierd hood sizing before. Thanks, both. Can anyone quote me the outer diametre of the BW-58C hood to the nearest 1/16-inch? I need it for my magnum opus FD hood table.

BTW, Barry, it's not the "more recent, more compact model." It is the *only* model. Canon made four 35-70s in the New FD mount (as well as one in the old FD mount) but yours is the only model that's 3.5-4.5.

What is the date on your copy of "Lens Work?" Mine's from 1981 and the New FD 35-70/3.5-4.5 didn't exist until March of '83. (See http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/lens/nfd/f_nfd.html ) I knew about the older, smaller lens brochures put out by Canon but I never suspected there were various editions of the larger book (at least not for the manual focus glass).

Also: Canon's "T90 Performance Book" lists your lens and confirms the BW-58C hood.
